I had fun dancing again!

The bad news is that it wasn't in this game. I picked up the game City of Heroes to play with some friends of mine who left SWG earlier this year. Just after creating my first character I was escorted to a dance club deep in a mysterious area called "Steel Canyon" by a frisky humanoid female cat. Once inside we gathered with a number of super heroes and danced. Unlike SWG, City of Heroes doesn't actually have a true dance profession. Every character is capable of dancing 5 or 6 different dances via an "/emote dance" command. The dance is randomly selected when you use the command so you have to use the emote a couple of times to get your favorite dance (didn't like that so much but I worked with it). Any how the reason it was so much more fun was that the people in the dance club were there TO dance. The dancing in CoH is not a game mechanic at all.... It's merely an emote that you can use for role play purposes. Interestingly enough there were about 20 people in there dancing. 20 people dancing for no needed purpose other than to be dancing.

So far I am finding the game to be really interesting. There are no crafters (tailors are NPC) and no true noncombat roles. Everyone is a super hero there is no other role you can play for right now. That being said they have left a number of tools in the game for role play purposes (like the dance club and a pretty good assortment of emotes).

All in all the single biggest difference I am finding between SWG and CoH is the lack of bitterness from players both on their forums and in the game itself.

I spend a lot of time emote dancing in all games... really, all that have dance emotes... and if they don't have real dance emotes, I fake it.

The cool thing about SWG Dancer is that it is trying to capture that craziness that makes people like us act this way in other games and turn it into a valid gameplay option. Hopefully our revamp will help us get back on track. The idea of validating this playstyle with real game mechanics is still very exciting to me.

the dances in CoH are very funny. I played in the open beta before it went out and then a for a free month before hanging up my cape and coming back to SWG. I was often on the street just dancing and encouraging people to join me. I have a screenshot somewhere of a group of superheros outside some mission point in acircle dancing with me.The game itself ended up boring me though. Lacked the creative freedom I have in SWG. Felt good to blow crap up though, dancing doesn't give me that tension releaser lol

Haha I just found the "boom box" emote this morning. It seems like just about anytime you plop it down near some supers you get a couple of people to walk over and dance.

Yup, yup. This really is at the core of what I called the SWG "Grand Experiment" so long ago. The idea of taking some of the more social and fun aspects that have been in other games, and giving them a real place as a core of potential gameplay.

I personally view the various entertainment professions here in SWG as just that... a bold experiment to go where other games have not. And that is to the benefit of those who've found these professions, and found them to be a lot of fun in their own right. There have been problems and setbacks along this evolution... this is to be expected. We're all in uncharted territory; blazing a trail, if you will, tobrand new opportunities ingaming.Things like planning a revamp are an opportunity to take what all of us have learned worked, didn't work, and put that knowledge to use in a next stage of the evolution of "social" type gaming roles.

And, to be honest, I'm very excited to be a part of that.

Believe it or not dancing in SWG is my tension releaser! I get really annoyed though I bust out My Taru Warrior on FFXI and laugh my head off as he stabs people in the knee. oh and gotta love the Taru! (go here: http://www.phank.com/images/tarutarutaru/tarutarutaru.html

Regarding City of Heroes (thats where I went to too, btw):

You notice one of the main differences?

_NO_PVP_

;-)

(at least, not yet... I just hope they make it right...)

Chimaera: Joshua --- Master Medic, Master Creature Handler
Chilastra: Nikita --- Master Entertainer, Master Musician, Master Dancer

GCW (Star Wars, Imperial vs Rebel) not equals PvP (Player vs Player)!
