And apparently assumes that I am an AFK buff bot just because I am flourishing. Der. (Actually, ealier that day on Dathomir someone got mad when I ran to the cantina to heal up a moment and they found out I wasn't a Dancer/musician bot. Oy. Got mad at Me!)
Anyway, he asks for a buff, I charge him and start the buff. The dork stops watching and only gets a 22 minute one. So he says something that I had heard the day before...
"Can you stop dancing when I say so I can leave and then start dancing again when I tell you?"
I had heard this the day before from a group of 5 guys. Apparently it was supposed to stack the mind buff.
Now, I know I have not been on the formus in literally months, but I am pretty sure that this can't happen, and if it CAN, then it is obviously a bug. And to use the bug knowingly (and since I KNOW that if it works it's a bug) that's an exploit, I couldn't do it. Again, they got mad. But this second guy kept pressing the issue. I explained that exploiting a bug is a bannable offence He finally had the audacity to say "Just tell them it was a macro and they can't ban you"
..... Yeah. Right. I told him that I wasn't going to limbo around the rules for him, disbanded and that was that. He said "Damn Roleplayers" as if that had anything to do with morals. ::snickers::
So. I may be rehashing something that the rest of you have heard about months ago, but is this new and are they really doing this? Because if so I'll be wary with my group buffs if someone runs off while I'm still dancing... I don't want to unknowingly go helping them either. Banned is banned and I want no part of it.

This bug has been in the game since they increased buffs (well over a year). All they really need to do is /stopw then /watch again then not /stopwatching a second time until their first buff ends. *shrugs*
The devs have made no attempt to fix it, no mention that it's wrong to do it or even officially acknowledged it. Who knows... It may not even BE a bug.

If it's not a bug that is exploitable (a debatable topic at best) then by the gods - charge them double for the buff!

I didn't know this was still in the game. A friend of mine used to do it, without my knowing -- he'd "go AFK" and do the /stopwatch and /watch and I didn't even notice it for a while. :/

Apparently this buff-stacking thingis still around, and at last I heard is indeed considered to be an exploit.
I'll poke for another official word on it, to be certain.

They haven't made any attempt to fix it have they? It's been in the game as long as /setperf.
*shrugs* It sure is confusing trying to figure out what is intentional and what isn't with the crappy way they decided to setup how our skill works.

Just a quick question on this... can they only use this with the same entertainer? If someone comes to me for a mind buff, gets one and then goes to someone else and that person stops dancing, will the person have a "stacked" buff? If so it's going to be a tough thing to prevent.
Also, they never, at least not to my knowledge, said the old "30 second" expolit was an exploit - and I actually contacted a CSR to try to get some sort of is it or isn't itruling. But they did remove it from the game so seems pretty clear it was considered an exploit. I certainly wish they'd come right out and announce that certain things are exploits since I get tired of having people throw it in my face. But from what I have seen they only make specific announcements if it involves credits or is a "game breaking" type of exploit (e.g. saber exploits that result in 40K damage per hit)
cheers,

It's my interpretation from what Deila has said here and otherwise that it is an exploit. Just because they haven't specifically mentioned in patch notes "instituted blah blah blah to prevent entertainer buff stacking" doesn't mean they approve of it, or even that they haven't tried to remove it. I remember it working differently before the 30 second exploit fix so I actually assumed they tried to fix it along with. And how long did smugglers wait for a fix to power up slicing? That was definitely an exploit, but the fix was long in coming.
So we're left with our judgment and common sense to determine if it is or isn't. And I think common sense says fairly clearly that it is.

While a list of what is and isn't an exploit would be nice, it will never happen. It would be too nice... Specifically for people who are looking for exploits. Once you know something exists it's not hard to find out how it is done. The things they have mentioned are typically things that the fix can cause problems with people who aren't trying to exploit. For example the tracing they did on a really big credit dupe. There has been more credit dupe fixes than have been announced, you can count on it.

Tiaga... There is no hoop to jump through for the dancer. Anyone watching a grouped dancer or musician can /watch then wait then /stopw then /watch again. If the dancer or musician isn't grouped they have to get a second /setperf.

They don't need a second /setperform. It isn't something where it grants one buff.. It merely sets the person who can recieve the buff, and it is that person until changed. For that reason I usually /setperform myself when I finish buffing someone so I don't have a current buff target.
But that's not the hoop I was referring to. Either the entertainer has to stop for the person to leave, or the person has to wait for the entertainer to stop to leave. Either way, here's the clue that it isn't working as intended: When you walk away from a performing entertainer, you automatically stop watching/listening. Therefore the conclusion can be drawn that you are supposed to automatically stop watching/listening when you walk away. If they aren't performing, it misses the check and you don't until you give the command. It's a similar thing to the 30 second buff people were doing... The clue there is that you are normally limited to 5 flourishes every 10 seconds, but by stopping and starting again you were able to go past that limit.

I personally agree with: Just because they don't mention it does not mean it is not an Exploit. As well as If you have to jump through hoops.
I mean, you ARE supposed to stop watching when you get a certain distance away. That is sure. And I remember "buff stacking" being called a bug way back in the day. (that being all of a year) So it just sets off little red flags when I hear something like that. "Stop wathing when I tell you and then start again when I tell you too...." ..... first of all, I know how my buff system works, they don't, so don't go giving me orders.
And secondly that does not sound right.
You can not listen or watch your TV in your bedroom if you are in your friend's garage 16 miles away. (well, some intense cabling, obsession and a lot of time to waste rigging computers and cameras....) It just does not seem to be an intentional game mechanic.
Not to mention that just because they don't mention it does not mean they are not trying to find it. Coding is such a pain in the neck, it's a little easier than reading DNA correctly. IF you go fiddling with one spot it unravles three more. Like grey hair hehe. Pluck one and ten more come to the funeral. Just because they know THAT it happens and HOW it happens does not mean that they know exactly WHY it happens. And when they find the WHY then they need to figure out what will happen if they push that button... and how to stop that.
I'm going to start setperforming on myself from now on at the end of my buffs too.
Alrighty. I have my anser though. As far as I am concerned, that is an exploit and ignorance is not an excuse. It seems a bit offcolor so it's best to be safe, not sorry. And that's how I'll deal with these guys who ask me for them
Even if they get mad and mock me, as long as they give me their credits first muahahhahahaa! They can have one buff, no stacks.

If you have to jump through hoops to do it, it's probably not intended. Having to stop so they can leave qualifies as jumping through hoops.
A measure of how long it's been in game is not a good measure of if it's a bug or not. If you try and claim it is then I'd tell you that lyrical and formal are supposed to look like you stagger around drunk, since it's been like that since the beginning it obviously must not be a bug, right?
You did the right thing. I know it can be hard sometimes.
