Oh, and for those asking here is the definition of MUD from www.urbandictionary.com

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MUD

abbrev. for Multi User Dungeon, as in Dungeons and Dragons. Very simply, it is an MMORPG but generally it has no graphics... which is an advantage because when one does not have to worry about creating visuals for every element of the game... anything is possible, and only the imagination is the limit. Unlike MMORPGs, MUDs are generally free to play and require no extra software. Although a client program such as ZMUD can greatly enhance the experience.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Basically MUDs are the forerunners to the MMORPGs we know today. (i.e. EQ, DAoC, SWG) They are completely text based and rely on text descriptions of areas as characters move around in the world. They are not as massive as the modern games. On MUDs I played there would be upwards of 100ish people playing at a maximum at one time. Generally their servers are located at a person's residence or a university campus facility.

An example of a room description for a MUD is like this:

A Large Comfortable Room

You are in a large spacious room. There is a large sofa along the wall to the (E)ast and a set of double doors leading out to the (N)orth. A smaller wooden door with a reectangular door knob lies (S)outh.

A Kindly Old Man stands here
A Kindly Old Man's dog stands here
Dir: S, N, E

>>

From this you know you're in a large room with a sofa. There are two NPCs in the room and you know the directions of the exits. At the '>>' prompt you would enter a direction to move out of the room or talk to the NPCs. Then you would go into another area description etc.
