Well, like they've said, before buffbots were hologrinders, and before hologrinders were LAMers (Long-term AFK Macroers). I've been an Entertainer since August 2003 and before that my main spent a lot of time shooting the breeze with Entertainers in the Coronet cantina while practicing crafting (not grinding it) and healing the Entertainers.
When I picked up Entertainer, I got it solely for the fact that I wanted to heal my own mind wounds. Once I got into a cantina and started Entertaining people, I realized it was probably the best playstyle in Galaxies. I played mostly in Mos Entha's Fallen Star with my first Entertainer friends and the combat folks who frequented it. In efforts to help people more, I would sometimesroam the galaxy searching for empty cantinas, and when I would find one, I'd staff it for a few hours. It was difficult to find an empty cantina in those days. Every once in awhile I'd find one on an adventure planet like Endor or Dathomir, but all the cantinas on Naboo, Corellia, and Tatooine were staffed at all times, and often with several full groups of Entertainers.
People of all types picked up Entertainer for various reasons and the cantinas were full of life--heh I evenremember times in the Fallen Star when my lag got so bad replies and emotes came a minute or two after I hit ENTER.
fFW mentioned how there would be "master Ceremonies." This is another fond memory of mine...a Wookiee on Starsider named Bluesbacca became one of the server's first Master Musicians. Even before Master, he had groupies who would follow him from cantina to cantina. He did a Masters Tour of the galaxy upon attaining the title, and the parties for that were amazing.

That's the way it "used to be." Do I miss those days? Sure as heck I do!!! However, as horrible as buffbots etc have been for these professions, I'm almost glad they came--I surely wouldn't have met all these wonderful people, because we all wouldn't have been forced together by our need for survival. Of course, I would still have many other friends who would have remained if it weren't for the AFK problem so....

I think I actually experienced some of the old days, this weekend in Theed Cantina on Eclipse.
For a couple of hours, we had a full group entirely consisting of atk'ers. It has been a looooong, loooongtime since I experienced that. On top of that, we had a waiting list of people who wanted in as well. Amazing!
With all those people talking, singing and generally entertaining, customers started flowing in and I actually got tips from several people I have never seen/met before. Just like the old days. People were in a very good mood and I even persuaded a couple of die hard pvp'ers to do novice entertainer so they could dance with us. Huge fun.
We made sure that when someone seemed afk and we had an atk asking to get in, the afk got booted. That made everyone stay at their keyboards and slowly realised that being live could be great fun. Not everyone liked the kick-an-afk idea but it worked.
I hope and pray that this weekend wasn't a single event but that it is a premenision (sp) of things to come and how the cantinas will once again be populated and be the places of fun that we came to know them back yonder.

cantinas were fun place to just sit down and talk
dancer and musican would joke and players would help answer questions about the game
going to a cantina was something to look forward to
