Oh, and I forgot to add that most of us read PC Gamer.

Nerds.

There are missions in which you "deliver an item while hostiles attack you" in every profession. I still don't consider [Smuggler's Alliance] pilots to be Smugglers, nor 'Smuggling' - at least not any more than Rebel Pilots or Imperial Pilots might sometimes "smuggle", with a lower-case s - JFreeman - 10/6/04

"Nerd" is a derogatory term. I may enjoy playing games in my spare time, but I'm unsure how much worse that is than clubbing all night, puking my guts out and going to work with a hangover. That's a good time? I have a large circle of friends (many of whom also play online), I'm raising 2 kids and I have a good job. My nerdish qualities are actually among my best, I think, because they let me help my daughter with her algebra, forecast staffing requirements for the next year at work, and still figure out what character class will work for me

The writer in question took an indefensible position, basically. He first admits living in a glass house and then goes ahead and throws stones at play styles he doesn't agree with. I can make just as much fun (more probably) of his playstyle choices as he can of mine. In fact, I'd be happy to /duel his butt as long as he didn't kite my TK

It bears mentioning here that the staff of PCG are the same people who purposely created characters in the Sims Online for no other reason than to grief other players - just to "show that it can be done" in what they saw as a "carebear game" (gag).

That's the quality of mental process we're dealing with here. The maturity level of the PCG staff must be sub-embryo by now. It keeps regressing.

It may be no coincidence that I was heckled for the first time a day or two ago -- by someone who repeatedly called me a "nerd." Perhaps the heckler gets all her ideas from PC Gamer, which is a frightening thought. In any case, I had a surprising amount of fun putting the heckler on /ignore.

For me, and most of my friends, the term "Nerd" is far from a derogatory term. Often, those that use it as such are uneducated/under-educated boobs.

Nerds, are more often highly dedicated (sometimes to the point of obsession) to the persuit of knowledge, people of immense imaginationa and creativity, people who's work is the foundation by which much of the world's current economy and social structure is built upon. If the musicians and dancers that fill the cantinas of these game are all indeed "nerds", then that would be hardly a thing to deride.

I, on the other hand, are far from veing able to be called a nerd. I am, and most proudly so, a Geek. Another title often used to insult people by those who have little idea of how much that word's meaning has changed today as well.

We aren't nerds... We are sad, socially disfunctional introverts with four plus hours a day to spend living out vivid fantasy lives in a virtual world because it's the only place were we can easily and comfortably socialize with other like minded people without actually having to leave the carefully protected comfortzones of our homes.

Don't these people know anything?

Eh...I'd like to say I cared about this, but PC Gamer hasn't had an issue worth reading in about 2-3 years. They used to be a badass magazine, then they removed all of the real gamers from the editor list and thinned the mag out so much it looks like a copy of EGM. Not to mention how lame the CD has become...I'd like to say shame on whoever wrote such a crappy article, but I'd rather say shame on you for reading PC Gamer.

Sinda wrote:

Check out the October issue of PC Gamer Magazine. One of the big reviews of the game is SWG, but they've given the game the double treatment. The main review, on page 146, is mediocre in its praise but overall pretty fair (better than being a fanboy mag, anyway) -- giving the game a 77%, marking it down for bugs and lack of content.

But on page 90, we have a different writer, one who doesn't even have the balls to put his name on the article. Called "A Galaxy of NERDS", here's what he says:

"A frightening number of people shelled out the $50 for Galaxies and are paying $15/month just to stand around in bars and play musical instruments. Even then they're not playing anything - they click the "Play Instrument" button and their character starts to make a bleating noise. That'sit. The rest is just hanging around the bar, begging people to give them tips."

"You may wonder, as we did, just what kind of person considers this activity a great way to spend his/her recreational time and dollars. The answer, we suspect, is simple: they're nerds. Nerds. Nerds. As in, cue Ogre screaming "Nerrrrrrrds!"

"There, we said it. And we don't care if you think it's the pot calling the kettle black. We may have collectively gotten our asses kicked in high school, but the musicians of Galaxies are the kids we beat up - the sub-geek strata of social existence, the Dawn Weiners of the gaming world, reviled even by losers like ourselves."

"I mean, I may spend my evenings playing as a Wookiee named Chewbacco, but at least I'm exchanging blaster fire with nomad kooks or upgrading from bone armor to Armorweave - y'know, cool stuff. No one would call that nerdy. Would they? Hey ... guys? That's not nerdy, is it? Guys? Hello?"

Under the tongue-in-cheek flavor and the ultra-weak attempt at self-effacing humor, I detect a certain arrogance, which is pretty remarkable considering that most of these game magazine writers are Unreal refugees who can't get a real job. The whole aspect of online games as social communities seems to have escaped their pistol-length attention spans and they've let their sub-pubescent machismo (you're only as studly as the size of your gun) creep into their common sense.

The article singled out musicians, but I consider musicians my brethern and would never consider staging a dance performance without some good ones behind me. And if some pencild!ck game reviewer who's still trying to pass his SATs thinks that's nerdy, let him. He'll grow up one day, too.

I'm going to fire off an email to PC Gamer while I'm this steamed (I do my best work in this state). If any of you want to chime in, send them to [email protected]. They need to know just how wrong they are.

So, we're nerds. So what? I mean, **edit**, look at who's calling us nerds: a PC gaming magazine. Pot, meet kettle. Kettle, meet pot.

Ya know, I think we're all pretty well old enough to take a little jibing from people who are paid tosound clever and edgy...

For me, I can't saythat judging people spend on how they spend their leisure time is cool... it's we do or don't do to earnourtime ofescapism/distraction that matters. If this 'nerd' business bothers you, well, maybe it is time to get out and get a little more sun...

This is the part I particularly liked:

"There, we said it. And we don't care if you think it's the pot calling the kettle black. We may have collectively gotten our asses kicked in high school, but the musicians of Galaxies are the kids we beat up - the sub-geek strata of social existence, the Dawn Weiners of the gaming world, reviled even by losers like ourselves."

Reminds me of how the band geeks thought they were cooler than the D&D geeks, and the D&D geeks thought they were cooler than the band geeks. Now we just need a debate geek to laugh at both of them for being geeks.

Ummm.... If you believe it not true, then just ignore it. They were just trying to be 'comical.' I dont think they meant to hurt any of you dancer/musicians feelings.

This is far too insignificant to even bother complaining about. There's much better things to complain about in SWG as it is.
