Bots really give us a bad name and I've suffered my fair share of it. However rather then getting angry at the ignorance and naivette of combatants, I've set out to teach them, one combatant at a time.
Combatants have been trained to approach an entertainer for a buff by stating, "Invite plz!!!" To curb this erroneous behavior I've done several things:
1. Ask combatant, "Are you an entertainer?"
"no"
"Then why do you want invite into entertainer group"
"i want buff"
"You know, you don't need to be in a group to get a buff."
It is sad how they are suprised by that statement... one said, I am not sure, but I'll trust you. However you have to approach them as ignorant of everything.
2. If you're feeling more snappy and don't wish to give them the benefit of courtesy, you can always foward to them a little email I like to keep reserved for situations such as these. The email reads as follows:
You are cordially invited to ask for a buff in the following manner, concurrent with proper grammar and coherency in line with the English language: "May I have a mind buff please?"
They wanted an invite and they get one.
Ultimately Buffbots have resulted in entertainers at large being viewed not as complimentary service... His question of you relegates your service to expected, however you were in no way treated like a bot... people don't ask bots questions unless 1. They are really really stupid (Which I wouldn't doubt for some combatants) or 2. The bot has such a good AI it answers questions (Highly unlikely). However, his treatment of you is a result of being provided 24/7 service from bots without them walking out on him. It was a wakeup call for him. Best thing I would do is assist him in facingthe harsh reality of the fact that not every entertainer is a bot. Tell him you have better things to do, then use your account for the purpose of AFK'ing soley to service him and his friends at their leisure. Tell, him that just like he doesn't always buff as a doctor, you don't always buff as a dancer. At this point, if they are still stubborn and obstinate, there isn't much you can do. Not everyone is intelligent or attentive enough to see that not every entertainer is AFK. Too many combatants see the galaxy through Buffbot inspired blinders... going straight to the buffbot, to get buffed, mind healing and BF healing and in the process ignoring every other entertainer, or relagating them the same status as an AFK buffbot. All we can do is open their eyes. I love to see someone walk in to see a group of synched choreographed dancers and go off about how they've never seen that before. Take theextra couple minutesto teach and preach, cause to leave a combatant ignorant only perpetuates the dilemna.

Oh, I'm so glad someone else does this too
But I am sorry you had a bad experience as no one deserves to be treated like that. The buffbot situation is more than out of control, and most combatants view mind buffs as theirright and not the privledge they are should they have asked a live entertainer nicely. I have just come from my Sunrunner home forum where a thread was sparked by the anger of combat players being ripped off by a buffbot in a backwater, dingy buffbot house. I can only speak for myself, but could only be amused by the irony of people being angered at being jipped by a machine programmed to loop a set of commands, a frustration that entertainers have been enduring for a long time. Needless to say, a member of the buffbot cheer squad decided to flame (**laughs** Well, no surprises there :smileywink
. However, I haven't let this get to me because I have had the satisfaction of receiving two pm's from combat players thanking me for re-adjusting the lens, because they didn't realise or see it that way before and now would prefer to have help finding the live entertainers. In this instance, I was lucky that my words struck a home truth and had "educated" two people out of the droves of buffbot supporters. Its people like this that make standing up for ourselves and profession worthwhile - there are good people out who don't realise the negative impact they are making, so hang in there

But I find myself treated like one.
I realize we have all read posts like the one I'm making so many times before. But tonight really ticked me off. I'm buffing a guidie when someone invited me to group with them, I declined and stated that I would be leaving the cantina when I finished buffing my friend.
He gets mad and says "well then how will I get my buff?" I said "I didn't know I HAD to buff you."
He got mad and left, and to top that off, he was a master docter. A docter who must get tons of tells for buffs and things should know better!
I'm not a bot
As a diehard Heavy Swordsman, I blush to admit that my first mastered profession was Dancer. And that was way back more than twelve months ago.
My third buff was with a lady in a Coronet cantina. A fishy walked up to me and demanded a buff. I told him that I was busy. He demanded to be let into the group so he could get one too. I asked the ladies I was buffing if they minded. They said they did mind. So I informed the fishy that he would have to wait. He accused me of being a whore rather loudly and stomped off.
/sigh
I'm not a dancer anymore. As much as it pains me to admit, it did bother me.
Moral of the story? Don't do what I did and quit.

Kinda hard to not take it personally when they verbally attack you in such a crude way. Calling someone a whore even in a game is uncalled for. I've seen people do even worse though.
I read the thread in the Sunrunner forums and it's sad cause the more hard core combat types that were being rude in that thread are basically the majority of what you find in the cantinas. They are in for a rude awakening, if and when, the afk buff bot situation is corrected. They might actually have to talk to the person that is buffing them hehe, and nicely.

I had a problem last night while I was re-buffing some fellow Special Forces Imperials during our quest to reduce the Alliance's galactic presence. We'd taken down three bases on Corellia, and moved to Tatooine to start whittling down the S.F. bases there. Pretty much everyone needed to get new mind buffs, in case any misguided terrorists tried to stop us.
The PvPing sister guild to mine has a couple buffbots.
(This really bugs me, and I think I've made it clear I don't approve, but oh well. I love my friends.)
I was performing music to administer superior buffs to the bot's, and the second group I did (yes...we had more than 20 Imperials running around wreaking havoc on PvP bases...it was fun!) had a lot of non-guildmates. One of the people in it kept talking about me in third person, even though I'd been talking quite a bit and had been smashing turrets with these people for over an hour. I finally lost my temper and said "I'm not an AFK buffwh*re, thank you. You can talk directly to me." He replied, "i thought you were a bot, srry." And I told him "I'm sure you did. There are, however, some people who actually PLAY ENTERTAINERS." All this was in groupchat. There were a couple people in the group who knew me, and thought it was all funny.
I just hope I hammered home (pun intended!) the point that not every performer is an NPC emulator.
On the bright side, in my new cantina I got 70k total for just being there to heal two folks who were kinda badly off. I wasn't even in the cantina initially...I saw them ride in and looked at their HAM and asked if they needed some time in the cantina. They were very happy I was there. It was nice to feel needed. (I'm the poster child for co-dependance.)

Yesterday a few people were partying in Theed. As it was breaking up, someone came in and said "invite plz". Me being the group leader at the time, of course, wasn't going to just invite someone wearing composite and just asking for an invite. SO I decided to try the "Are you an entertainer?" line on him.
I was quite surprised when he paused a moment, then asked nicely and in a full sentence with properly spelled words for a buff. I wasn't expecting that. Needless to say, he got his buff.

Hehe, i had occurances like that. People inviting me to groups as if i was a buffbot. I find it kinda funny, but also sad cause it reflects how bad it has become now.

Most people nowadays walk up and just invite you to group with them. I too ask if they are entertainers or are seeking a buff. After several promptings, because they just think it's a macro speech, they will state that they want/need a buff and then Iwill ask if it is for a group of friends or just them.
Once I explain that they don't need to be grouped to get an individual buff and explain about directed performance they are usually amazed and most will say that they had no idea that you did not need to be grouped to receive a buff. I do stress that this only works with Live Entertainers.
Once they get a 2 hr buff from me in 1 minute 20 seconds they usually seek me out the next time they need a buff.

thanks for the replies.
I have found that a nice break from the game has been good. It's so hard to leave something where you make a nice little community of friends.
Now, if I could keep myself off the forums
I, or well my alt (Shekinah) will be entertaining again in no time!

Some solutions for you.
1. /addignore is your *friend*.
2. Get a performance droid, or heck any droid, and group with it. Once you are grouped you can't get an invite. Bye-bye invite-griefing.
3. Buff your friends in some non-cantina place. You can do it in camps, houses, etc. You don't have to be in a cantina to do it. Cantinas are public cesspools of uber-leets and bot-tainers, and not worth performing in at this point, any longer.
Personally, I don't bother with most of the public venues any more. There's not much point. Hyperdrive does its tour and when they are with me, it's fine (since we are all friends). But the days of me going to a random public cantina (e.g., on Endor) and trying to perform the way the profession was supposed to do, are long over. It is not worth the hassle anymore. Sad, but true.
