I find it odd that someone who posts a request for help receives such a barrage of negativity in response

Oh, bringing up the fact that the dancer forum prefers to skip netspeak and that people now consider themselves "new" at master rather than in the early days of their leveling isn't really odd or negative. These are helpful things for anyone who wants to become an active part of the ent community to know.

Our little tight knit community identity has been taking a beating for quite a while now. Information is just passed out differently these days. *shrug* No one was really being a snob here and the OP's question was answered in the first reply. No big.

In defense of the master dancers who do not know /changedance /bandflo or any other super skills... I ATK'd my way to master dancer, but wasn't very social with the other entertainers as I was kinda shy and new to the whole MMORPG.

It wasn't necessarily my desire to not know how to work my character, but just plain fear of talking to others... which has almost completely evaporated since I began posting in the Dancer forum.

Well, true. I just think that when it's the vast majority who don't know anything other than /macro there's a problem. There's always excteptions to every generalization. It's more a difference in attitude, there -- you obviously care to learn but hadn't been exposed to some of the things you could learn, but did learn them when you were! So that's all good!

I can understand not socializing much, I don't myself.

And..

Apologies to jackel101 for coming off cranky, too. 'Twas unintentional, and I will take more caution to avoid it in the future!

Yeah, I know I'm not meaning to direct any anger at the poster -- just discussing what came to mind when I read the post, /shrug.

I had a lot of fun learning how things worked as I climbed up the dance trees and had just as much fun at novice ent as master dancer. IMO it's the same game at novice ent as master dancer anyway, just with a different animation.

I understand /setp is a unique case since the command doesn't show in the command browser (/cough /cough) so I'm not saying the original -poster- is out of the loop on dance commands, just generally commenting that the vast majority of masters I meet now are completely ignorant of not only /setp (which is wholly usable by novice elite and up) but of /changedance, the fact that lyrical only has 4 working /flos on live, /bandflo, /changeband, /startband, /stopband, but also can't differentiate poplock2 from rhythmic or in fact identify any of the dances by name.

There's nothing wrong with a specific thread spawning a general discussion even if the topic is negative, and in this case I think we've all mentioned that we don't direct any of this negativity at the original poster. The issue of people going from novice ent to novice and master elite without learning the basic tools of the profession is a negative topic, there's no way around that.

Our profession has a lot of issues right now, and we need to feel comfortable discussing them. We can't make people fear posting because they might get negative responses, yes.. but we also can't make people fear discussion because they think they'll get flamed for trying to talk about something "negative."

I actually thought Pandorren was referring to the constant attacks on grammar.

I had a newbie entertainer ask me the other day what song was the band playing, when I was on my musician. I said it was Star Wars 3 from the sounds of it. She wanted to know how I knew that. I said because I knew what the songs sounded like! I wasn't trying to be mean to her or anything, but I knew the distinct sounds of the flourishes in Star Wars 3. Comes with the territory when you play at the keyboard. I can spot what dance is what and normally can identify which flourish is what number in a specific dance. Just little things that I learned as I played the professions.

Some people are generally needing help in learning because they may actually be new to the game and a younger player, which I'm noticing more these days. Some people just need to actually sit at their computer and see what their characters actually know how to do. There's a big difference in that!

Ahhh prolly more about the netspeak thing, though in my mind I was grouping that with "discussion spawned by the topic." My mind is a scary place, though, and you should not in the least feel odd if its inner workings do not conform to yours.

Either way!

Don't mind me. I'm at work (NOOOO I AM NOT AFK MACROPOSTING!!), I really should wait 'til I read all these things thoroughly.

And.. /bonk CloverRidge

No being ashamed for not knowing, if you levelled ATK and were willing to learn -- there is much more shame in the fact that us old people weren't around to teach you (unless you're one of us old people from the first few months, then I think we were all figuring things out newbishly anyway )

Welcome to the Dance forums. It gets a bit odd in here. Sometimes it's us--we take ourselves too seriously. Sometimes it's not us--Others don't take us seriously enough. I promise you that at least 80% of the population here is interested in helping you to enjoy being a dancer. Some will insist you can only enjoy it if you do it the way they do it, others will encourage you to do things in whatever fashion suits you best but ALL of us are concerned for the reputation of the proffession and those who play it.

Feel free to express yourself in whatever way you are comfortable using. If you like to abreviate everything and substitute numbers for letters, You are more than welcome to do that, but given the demographics of dancers you'll have to excuse us for being a bit confused by it as most of us do not speak "Moron". Some of us have learned how to read and translate it but we prefer not to have to.

There are a ton of good posts around here that can help you enjoy the proffession dispite it's many flaws and several conversations regarding the flaws and ideas to fix them. I strongly encourage you to take a peek around and see what we've been up to in here. Post your questions and opinions (in whatever slanguage you are comfortable with) and we will do our best to encourage and help you become a great dancer and the kind of entertainer people WANT to visit with even when they have no battle fatigue or wounds.

On a side note, we like to disagree with each other. We enjoy an argument for the sake of the argument because it makes a good conversation. This is one of the few places where folks can disagree and keep on talking. Please don't be shy. If you disagree with something, say so and back up your stance on the issue. We'll still like you.
