Thread: I don't buff new people. Don't waste my time. (Sad Moment :(

Now I'm working on Dancer, have been for several weeks (so obviously not AFKing it or I'd be done in four days like others,) and after sitting for hours in Cantinas while I do homework, type papers between my alt-tabbing...I've realized some Entertainers do treat others, almost with like "contempt."

I understand there's lots of jerky people out there -- but take for instance some members of the more popular "bands" of my server -- I will not name any names, this is not an individual attack, it's an example.

A person came in looking for mind buffs, and went to the Master Dancer who was doing Mind Buffs -- he was very kind to her, did a /wave, and asked "Mind if I buy a buff?" She didn't respond -- but repeated her buff macro.

He then said something like, "Sorry to bother you...was just wanting to buy a buff." At which she replied, "I don't buff new people. Don't waste my time."

I was in complete shock -- the guy had a little Apprentice Gunfighter title, and if /examined him he had mastered nothing, so was probably pretty new -- but through my weeks in Cantinas, I've actually realized this kind of attitude isn't new -- it is growing common on Eclipse.

When I was in Theed, I even had some friends talking to me, and another Master Dancer in the Cantina said, "Don't talk to Griffin, he's not a real dancer, he's just doing this for Jedi." I didn't even respond to that -- yes I've done some professions, even did two holocrons. But I don't care about Jedi, I care about fun.

I started dancer after doing nothing but combat for 9 straight months, *broken* combat mind you. These couple weeks of dancer have been more fun for me than past months of Player vs Player. Talking to new people, meeting new people...everything. THIS is fun, and has been more fun than I've had in months...

I know most Entertaining Types are not like this, most are wonderful and kind people, despite the abuse they've taken from immature and simply rude players. But lately I've seen attitudes from Dancers/Musicians towards other players are outright crazy - has anyone else noticed this from other Entertainers on your servers? Or am I simply being naive?

I don't condone rudeness towards the entertainers, nor from the entertainers. Trust me, I've seen my fair share of dancers and such get verbally abused from people, but I always try to stop it -- but I don't want us to turn into them either.

I witness constant squabbling between Entertainers on which "girl" they own too, I despise that especially.../sigh

That's pathetic. It really is. Before becoming a dancer I got that treatment. I was a wookie then and she wouldn't buff me. Wouldn't even talk to me (even though I tried several times through both tells and spatial) yet she found time to buff my husband's char who was right beside me. Maybe she was Imp and doesn't do anyone else but she didn't say one word on that. I was not happy. I only went to Theed and Coronet to master and now I stay away. I go to Bestine, or to the Science outpost on Dath, etc. The quiet places. I also don't get as many rude clients as well.

i notice the author of this topic is from my server, eclipse. from my experience dancing in the static cantinas, eclipse tends to be especially cliquish in the entertainment business. this kind of attitude doesn't surprise me at all, actually. sure, i made quite a face when i read that because i think that is one of the most absurd things i have ever heard. i fail how to see buffing a new face in the game is a waste of time... they probably are in needjust as much if notmore than most others because they're trying to level and get ahead in their professions. who is to say who deserves a buff more anyway? oi.

I would actually prefer it if you gave out the name of the person who acted so shabbily. How else are people supposed to know who it is?

"Ironically, while researching this piece a representative from Sony asked us to keep in mind that many of the players complaining "weren't playing the class right," and that the class was designed as a solo experience. Such a comment is indicative of the original Ultima Online mistake: not realizing that once an MMO is released to the public, it no longer belongs to the developers, it belongs to the people paying $14.99 a month for the service."

People get yelled at if they leave names on the boards...

I love buffing new people, they are always so excited. About the buff, about the cantina, about the clothes, and all the people... and they want to talk about what they want to master and over all are just really fun.

Of course, the only people I ever refuse to buff are emote molesters, lol. Besides, as others have said, it's just nice to give real noobies freebies and just explain the tipping system... what a silly dancer to bite the hand that feeds us.

That's too bad. I know some of the apparently more active and vocal posters on the entertainer boards come from Ecliipse, and I've seen the acts there viaa character I started on Eclipse to check things out, there are some very nice acts there indeed.

That aside, that's a very poor attitude for anyone to express in the game towards another person for any reason, especially new people.

I always believe ..do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

You wouldn't want someone being an ass to you, right, so don't be one to them.

That's a sad attitude for an entertainer to have, and say something like that.

That is simply incredible. Thankfully, I for one have never seen this attitude from an entertainer, and I hope I never do. All that would do is help trash entertainers even more than they already are.

I for one love to buff new people. Part of it is because since I talk to so many people and know alot about everything, I can impart that knowledge on to the new guy. Makes me feel like an important contact.

Besides that, if you treat the new guy well, s/he will seek you out the next time they need a buff, and bring their cash and knowledge with them

Great arrangement I think.

Attitudes like this are bound to exist. What would happen if this occured to you IRL?

Simple. You'd remember. And you'd never go to that dancer again, and you'd tell your friends about it as well. Soon enough, a rude dancer is going to gain a bad reputation and business might start dropping off.

Don't forget about some of the subtleties of this profession... reputation with other players and word of mouth. It looks to me like these subtleties make the difference between your garden variety Master Dancer and those who gain fame and reknown in their galaxy. Play it up.

I'm glad others aren't seeing this...but what my fellow Eclipser said is true, our server is full of weird cliques and groupings of people...

People *share* each other, and it's kinda freaky.

But I'm glad to hear this is kinda isolated to my server alone...well not really, but you know what I mean. And you're right, helping new people can be really rewarding...a newcomer to my guild was asking for help, and I gave him an old suit of light composite (40% resists, minimal HAM) and he's been ecstatic over it for a week now.

The way mind damage is...some newbies only survive through mind buffs too.

Sad is the right word - or at least one of them.

If someone comes in that is obviously a noob and wants a buff, they usually ask what they're supposed to do. Noob clothes, noob questions and few if any badges generally means a noob. I chat, explain, ask why they want it (usually the answer means they really don't know). I buff them for free - no exceptions - I will NOT take their money since they're probably not going to be able to use it anyway. Give them tips while I dance and offer as much help as possible. I've been known to tip them to help them get started in the game.

Everybody was new once. If nobody helped you that's sad too and I am sorry I didn't see you first. But please - remember how hard it was for you and give the new girl or guy a helping hand. Isn't that why you wanted to be an entertainer in the first place? Oh - you're hologrinding? Then finish up and leave please. Real dancers need the floor space.
