Thread: Future Friday Features

Alright, dancers... let's take this Friday Feature idea and run with it. We may not have likedsome ofthe FF articles that have come out lately, so - why don't we take a bit of ourfutureinto our own hands, and come up with our own Friday Feature articles to submit for consideration?

The Dancer, and all entertainer professions, really, may well be some of the most misunderstood professions in SWG. The idea of including the social playstyle so prominently (as actual professions that are geared towards social play, rather than as tacked-on to other areas) is a pretty new thing, and obviouslythere is much confusion out there about who we are and what roles we fulfill in a living, breathing Star Wars world.

We have numerous posts and threads all the time discussing how little the rest of the playerbase seem to know about what we do, how we work, and maybe most importantly, why we do it. Why not submit articles that cover some ofthese things? Sure sounds like a pretty good vehicle to 'educate the masses' about a lot of these topics, provided we do it in a constructive and informational way. Between our dancer, musician and entertainer forum communities, I'd say we have a pretty strong showing of the expertise in these areas - and I say it's time we shared some of that time-earned knowledge and expertise outside of our own little corner of the forums here.

Off the top of my head, a few topics we might think useful for a Friday Feature:

  • The Beginners Guide to Coordinated Performance A guide that educates newer dancers on methods of designing coordinated shows, and why those aremore fun than randomly'mob dancing' around the floor of the cantina, as well as shedding some light for the rest of the playerbase that there's more to the entertainer professions than "tipz n healz, plz!";

  • How to Get an Entertainer Buff - A Combattant's Primer Could be a universal guide for buff recipients letting players know what to do, what not to do, and that they don't have to be grouped, to receive a perfect entertainer buff under our current buffing code;

  • The Lost Art of Tipping in SWG Notes, thoughts, and discussion of the reasons why the concept oftipping isin SWG. Importance of the role oftipsfor services rendered by entertainers, medics, smugglers, and any other profession that provides services to other players outside of the vendor sale structure, and how some professions were designed to receive tips as their main method of income;

And I'm sure that we have the potential for numerous other ideas. Just think back to any time you've said to yourself, "I really wish everyone knew about X...", and think if that X might make a good Friday Feature guide.

The key, I think, is to write them not solely from an entertainer's point of view, but from the perspective of being a guide to the greater playerbase at large, letting people know about the many things we wish they knew about us and what we do for the SWG game experience. Something with information for everyone seems more likely to be published than something for a smaller subset of players - so, let's let them all know why we're cool and important!

So... use this thread for posting drafts of potential Friday Feature articles for feedback, discuss with other dancers and musician visitors which ideasmight make for strong submissions, etc. When we have some good community feedback on an article, and it's ready to go, I'll send those off to be considered for Friday Features. It'sa chance for usto be heard, and share some of that vast knowledge and experience that we've collected up in our time as the entertainers of SWG!

Delia, now that /register is finally working properly on TC, a Friday feature or tuesday tip covering how it works once this fix goes live would be a great great thing.

Why? Because it can finally let those of us who entertain out of player cities let people know that we are there. But, since it has had issues forever, no one has ever used it and few people are in the habit of checking anymore. With this working, there is no way that people can ever complain that they can't find an entertainer, and player city cantinas might get more business

I think those three Deila listed plus the "How to find an Entertainer Performer for Healing and Buffing" that Tess suggested would be perfect.

Maybe a fifth guide on planning an Entertainer Event would be useful, but a lot of that would be a general player events guide. Those first four would be great for sure though.

I have a stickied post in the Entertainer forum labelled almost exactly that - it started as a post mainly to highlight the different entertainer channels, and people suggested I add in other methods of finding us as well, so I added them in. I could pretty it up and update it, if this is deemed a worthy friday feature type thing.

Go for it, Scip!

We've got some ideas... now if we can get some volunteers to write up guides... hint... hint...

I may have a bit of time to do one or another myself in a bit here. Things have been very chaotic for me the last two weeks or so. Last class is today... I'm finishing up my bachelors finally, after all this time. Officially over in... 2 hours and 10 minutes.

/pause 6600; /say Yay, congrats!
I'm wanting to write up a (new) guide, but don't know if I have time. I kind of started the other day, but didn't get very far before I had to go off and do other things. If I feel like I'll get somewhere with a guide, I'll throw a heads up here.
I should definitely have time to make my post into guide form though, since the substance is already there for the most part . We have any 'deadlines' on these sorts of things?

Nope, no 'deadlines'. For some of these things, like how to use the registration system, it'd be good I think to have it coincide with the publish hitting live. Course,that's not up to me to decide, but it does make sense.

Basic Guide for Coordinated Performances.

The Beginners Guide to Coordinated Performances
Band flourish is an entertainers best friend for coordinated performances. An entertainer has the ability to use the commands /bandflo 1-8 to sync up with other entertainers. The entertainer running the band flourishes is the only one who gets the experience. So you may not get experience right now, but don’t fret the look of dancers all dancing in unison and musicians all doing like flourishes is simply amazing. Experience can come at any time, get a group together and take turns doing the band flourishes. Many combatants will appreciate the extra effort of all parties involved and tips for a coordinated group tend to be higher. If you want to go and do your own thing and not participate in a group running band flourishes all you have to do is /bandflo off. You will not do the other groups flourishes and will get the same experience as before without all the spiffyness of a large group in unison.

Sample Band Flourish Macro
“BandFlo”
/bandflo 1
/pause 10
/bandflo 4
/pause 10
/bandflo 8
/pause 10
/bandflo 7
/pause 10
/bandflo 3
/pause 10
/bandflo 2
/pause 10
/bandflo 5
/pause 10
/bandflo 6
/pause 10
/echo Hit that Band Flourish Button Again

I have the pauses set at 10 as other players don’t get experience, but still lose the action of doing the flourish. Some species aren’t as well set as some for action stats. Remember your in a group this is a group effort please be kind to everyone. Some may even want the pauses at 15 or 20 if your all doing a high level song or dance.

The person running the flourishes only gets the experience that they would normally receive not the experience of the full group. Also the leader (running the flourishes) will start doing the flourish a second or two before someone else, sometimes its better to space out with the leader in the center doing a different dance or instrument, so It doesn’t look out of place with one too fast for everyone else. Another useful addition to this would be the /split command, if only one person of the bandflourish group gets the tip its most beneficial for everyone to /split (tip amount) so you split it evenly over the entire group. This will split it amongst everyone near you in the group. Even folks not participating in the band flourishes. Good luck to everyone with your coordinated Performance.

Now moved to Here to get it more in the open to get feedback

How to get an entertainer Buff – A combatants Primer
Entertainers have the ability to buff your mind stats, Focus and Willpower done by a Musician, while the Mind Stat is done a Dancer. Important things to remember when dealing with an entertainer are :

Please unequip any weapons your using or anything your holding in your hand. This is important as it really helps an entertainer to know when you start watching or listening. (You will start clapping if your hands are empty)

Don’t Watch any other dancers or musicians, before you are getting ready to get a buff. Sometimes things can be glitchy and you will not get a buff if you are watching another entertainer.

You don’t have to be grouped with an entertainer to receive a buff. Entertainers have this nifty command called /setperform (Name), or /setperform while clicked on a target. The Buffer will receive a message saying you have directed your performance on %NT (yes it says %NT it wont say your name to them) and you the buffee will receive a message similar to %NT has directed their attention towards you. (Again it actually wont say their name)

To get the maximum buff time, you will have to watch or listen for 120 flourishes with constant flourishes or 5 flourishes then 8 second pause (only 5 flourishes max per 10 seconds can be done) this comes out to around 3:00 of watching the performer. The buff strength goes from 10% at novice Musician/Dancer to 100% at master. That is 10-100% of the base stat being buffed. If you have 1000 Mind and get a master dancer buff you will have 2000 for 2 hours. However if you have 400 Mind from the same Master you will only have a mind of 800 for 2 hours.

For the buff to take effect you have to /stopListen or /stopwatch, sometimes the server doesn’t register this so please do it repeatedly until you stop clapping and get the buff. Dancers can see your mind stat increase but they do not get a message that the buff has been successfully applied, however musicians also get no such message but cannot see your substats so please tell them that your buff was successful when it is all done.

Clothing, There are in existence skill tapes that increase the buff value. With +25 in these tapes entertainers can buff you for up to 125% of your base mind stat in the same amount of time. There is the exotic leotard which has a +5 mod already included in it. These can be only worn by female entertainers. Also these tapes tend to go for outrageous prices and many entertainers cannot afford them. Tipping helps.

Etiquette :
Most conversation from entertainers to you, is either to help you get the buff faster, or as an attempt to help you relax and enjoy yourself. After all that is our job. If non masters ask you if you would be happy with a 10% buff please have the courtesy to respond, they are trying to learn things as well as you, about the entertainer profession and would like some practice buffing at any chance they get. If you aren’t happy with a 10% buff just say so. There should be problems from an entertainer accepting that.

Entertainers are people as well. Please as a common courtesy don’t slap, smack, spit or harass the entertainers. Also taking an instrument from a musician while how ever funny it may be to you is harassment.
