Thread: Making money as an entertainer

Okay so I've been reading through quite a few posts and threads on this forum for about 2 weeks now and just today I see another post that says:

"The same way I've been making money as an entertainer since day one. Talk to people. Entertain people. I have made 100k-200k per night, regardless of my skill level, when I interact with people in the cantinas. Especially when I've headed out to Kashyyyk. "

Now I don't mean to attack any particular person here and I appreciate your sentiment and in fact agree that in order to be an entertainer one must actually "entertain and interact" with the audience. But please for the love of Mike, John, Suzy or whoever STOP implying that those of us who aren't making 100-200K per night aren't doing these basic actions!! I great each and every person many by name. I make an effort to make my performance interesting - despite some of the hideous motions they have given us at the lower dance levels. I spent hours scouring maps, game guides,etc.. so that I can provide answers when people /yell for information. So if I'm not making 100K per night does that mean I suc$ at entertaining? Does it mean the people who are online and on my server when I'm entertaining are tightwads? The fact of the matter is people tip if they think you are providing something of value. If I'm "unlucky" enough to be in a time and place where the vast majority don't give two figs about how many ribbons I can twirl while making interesting conversation then I'm not going to be making money unless the devs give me some functional role to have in this game. So if you can make money being an interesting "chatter" then more power to you. But please remember that not everyone is going to tip simply because I can type something in a chat box and make cool swooshing effects.

Here, here.

Not only do the cantina patrons want something useful from us that is tip-worthy, I want to PROVIDE something useful and tip-worthy to them.

I know alot of players like to chat with the dancers etc.. while in the cantina's kinda helps pass the time . So alot of players after they are done healing and chating with dancer for example will tip . I know alot of players who will not tip afk folks but some do it any way . I know many will turn away from dancers if the cover charge is just to insane .

(Disclaimer: The following comment is not meant to imply that anyone on these boards engages in thefollowing impliedactivity. )

I see a great many people declaring that they make a ton of money just dancin' and chattin' away. Cool. That's certainly admirable, in this day and age.

What a lot don't tell you is that their idea of "chatting" and your idea of "chatting" are.. shall we say.. greatly different. *cough*

It helps me look at some of the dancers I know in a whole new light when they accidentally mis-tell and you discover exactly how it is they got that really nice tip.... /evilgrin...

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'd rather make less money and know that it was honest.

Chii..I know what you're implying and..heh..I think we've all seen it. I'm one of those dancers who'll be the first to say that I make a lot of credits from dancing..A Lot..but *that* has never been how I made it. I know you've triedsome of the things I've showed you with how I mix dances. Add lights to that, costume changes, toss Tilinto the mix for a few jokes..what do you think theytip me for? For some people, chatting up the crowd is what brings in the tips..I'm not a chatty person..I'm certainly not a lapdancer..everyone has their own style.

I did see a dancer, the other day, with a bio that stated something along the lines of:

Please send tell for a free private dance

- Neeill Orkaorchi, Elder Entertainer/Elder Musician, Intrepid
- Nai'ren, Trader, Intrepid
- ATK and enjoy your day

Drop Off Vendor: FOE Canyon, Talus (4408, 2199)

Arrogance is unavoidable. The trick is to find an arrogance you can live with

I'll respond, since you singled me out.

1. I'm not bashing anyone for *not* making that kind of money. I was responding to what you said that "if buffs are gone, how do we make money". I simply stated all the different ways we *can* make money. We can make money by entertaining. If your *only* reason for being an entertainer is fast credits, then yeah, it will be hard to make money.

2. In regards to the other folks talking about the naughty talk "chatting". Yes, there are people who do that. Since you started this thread to single out what I said (and maybe you should quote ALL of what I said), I'll stand up right now and say that all my chatting is straight up chatter. Nothing lurid. The game is PG 13 and I believe in leaving it like that in the *public* areas. What people do on their sorosub or in the privacy of their "homes" is up to them.

Look, if you think *I* personally attacked you, or you have issue with me, please take it private. Don't hide behind "I don't mean to attack any particular person here" and then quote them. You could have simply reworded my statement and commented on it.

I stand behind my comments...ALL of them. Not just the part you posted.

Sti, sweetie, I don't think you were meant to be singled out specifically. There are a ton of people who say exactly what you said, I think you just happened to be the one s/he had a quote for. Heck, I've been known to say almost exactly what you were quoted for. I think it was just a case of "This person said what I'm referring to best", not a case of "I'll quote her because she'll know I mean her, but I can pretend I didn't".

Ya know...I just don't know anymore. It just seems we're all fighting *each other* instead of fighting "The good fight", ya know? And if I hadn't been burned on the other thread, I probably wouldn't be so fired up in this one. I just believe that if you are going to cut/paste someone's text and respond to it, you should state "I do/don't agree with you ____ because of _____ reason".

I think I'll go log in and find the beach party on Kettemoor. Maybe grab a Jawa Beer and calm down.

There's a beach party on Kette? I'm ON Kette, and I didn't know this.

I'm going to the casino tonight. You should stop by! Throw me an email on Chii if you need directions.

The Casino? I don't know where that is. *grin*

I've only been on kettemoor for a month, after meeting so many GREAT people there from your server. They were so much more positive and less drunk that my server mates.

Well when I say I don't mean to single out any one person or attack anyone, that's exactly what I mean. I used your quote simply because it was the most recent. But you sure as heck aren't the only one who's said "to make money simply do X". Where X is the most basic and simplistic of things that anyone in a massively multiplayer game should be doing regardless of desire to be tipped. It's not like I'm just standing by the bar tooting my horn with the same 3 notes over and over expecting to be tipped simply because I have a horn. And to be honest every time I read one of those posts, and there sure did seem to be a lot of them dating back as far as I could stand to read, I wanted to strangle someone. I didn't quote your whole post nor the entire post of anyone else because this was the thing I found objectionable. To be honest right now I don't even know what else you said or whether it had anything to do with the price of brandy in Bestine.

I like entertaining, it gives me a welcome break and, one would hope, an opportunity to actually interact with other live beings. I don't expect it to be the money maker that flying space missions is but I don't think it's out of line for anyone who chooses the profession to want to make money doing it. It is called a profession after all right? Doesn't that usually imply you make money doing it?

How can I possibly have an issue with you? I don't even know you. I had an issue with something you, and many others have said. It's why I didn't even attribute the quote to you. Because it wasn't about you. It was about reading something and feeling like there's a group of people out there who seem to think that any entertainer not making money is a dunce who needs to be told that in order to make tips you have totalk to people. That may not have been your intention. Maybe you thought what you wrote was going to be helpful and inspiring. But that's not how I felt when I read it.

I'll keep in mind that you don't like to be partially quoted and avoid that in the future. By the way I never said "if buffs are gone, how do we make money?" That was someone else. My intention was not to make you feel attacked but rather to get people to stop implying that all you have to do to get tipped is simply put on a good show. I can put on the most amazing production number the server has ever seen but if no one comes into the cantina to see it then who the heck is going to tip? If someone does come to the cantina but is just interested in whatever service there is and wants to get the heck out of there before they find themselves in a position where someone has spoken to them, then they probably won't care about the performance either. And thus far both those situations have been the sum total of experience I have had in the cantina.
