Thread: New Idea? Pet Skill Mods?

I am kinda new, so I have no idea if this has ever been talked about before... but has anyone ever thought that /tame would actualy be of use if certain pets added mods to various skills like BE clothing does or perhaps work in a way like the various droid types do? Its easier to imagine droids filling most skill mod roles... but certainly pets could do it too.

Its not hard to imagine a slice hound giving a bonus to a tracking skill, or perhaps a womp rat giving a bonus to forage. Perhaps flits and rasps could give a bonus to entertainer healing. Diseased animals could give an exp bonus to med crafting exp... and perhaps a huurton howler could give a bonus to warcry. The various snakes could help in poison crafting. There are tons of skills in this game and tons of creatures that could help augment them!

If it was put in, (though it probably never wouldbe...) it would solve 2 big problems that CH's have!

First and most obviously it would make /tame a usefull source of income for creature handlers! It would also make creature hunting fun trying to find high mod babies!

Secondly, it would allow CH's to give themselves much desiredbonuses through creature handling since mods could be added to high lvl CH only pets that would only be available to, well... high lvl CH's.

It would also breathe life into pets that maybe no one uses, and is... at least I think is... a great idea to make CH much more happy without making them the FoTM once again.

Any thought on this?

It's a good idea, and has come up before (in one form or another).

The two big concerns with skillmodbonusesin my mind, though, would be replicating the functionality of other professions (i.e. Chef foods) and creating a state where players can stack skillmods from various sources (profession skills, chef foods, skill-enhancing attachments, squad leader bonuses, modded clothing/weapons, Force sensitive skills, and potentially pets) to become "uber." The latter is particularlytricky to where youcan end up creating a massive numeric advantage between an average joe and someone who is modded out of control.

My favorite ideas are "utility pets" similar to (but different than) what we see in droids. Not so much buffing your skillmods, but rather adding new functionality. Like your example of a slice hound giving you better tracking options and/or range. Or the famed fambaa shield generators. Or a pet that can /drag corpses or incapacitated players to your location (maybe certing the latter function to Medics, to avoid stepping on /drag). That sort of thing.

Vert,

I like the idea of the skill mods for pets. But what if, instead of applying them to other professions, we concentrated on the professions that we CH's need to go through to get to our elite profession. For example, like the guy in the post before stated, Womp rats for foraging, or better yet, harvesting? Yeah, I know they have the droids for that. But wouldn't it be nice to use one of our own pets instead of having to spend insane amounts of money just to buy a droid? It's hard enough for a CH to get money besides missions. More often than not, I see MCH's also dabble in the Ranger profession to help them look for pets to tame or to just grind. Again, like the guy in the above post said, Slice Hounds for tracking. That would help a CH/Ranger quite a bit. I don't know if I'm just repeating what the guy before said, but if we could narrow down what the mods do so that they don't step on the toes of the other professions (DE's or BE's, etc.), I think it could work if it wasn't made to be total uber, but also, not totally worthless to a CH. We still use some harvesting for camps or traps and the tracking or even something that would slightly increase our use of mask scent. Maybe some don't use the skills much anymore, but I know I use them quite ALOT.

Would this make a little more sense if we thought about it in this way, Vert?

You know, we are too nice for our own good Vert. I did not see the "toe stepping" concern when they replaced mounts with vehicles and wild tames with BE pets. Yes, they gave those professions something they needed to be viable but they did it at the expense of the CH. I never heard a peep from a Dev about being concerned about stepping on a CH's toe. Why should we be concerned about stepping on one of the Dev's favored professions now?

The stacking question is a valid concern but the +25 cap would take care of this. It would be just like looted skill tapes and armor attachments. The big difference is most people can only call one pet or one droid at a time. So, the MD would not use the pet because he need his medical droid and pets can not be called in alot of places. The Novice medic would use a + medical pet. How would this be any less balancing than BE tissues and loot? Give us a pack creature how is this different from backpacks and storage droids? They did not mind stepping on the toe of the guy who made backpacks to give a bennie to the DE.

Face it, the Dev's have their favorite professions. We are not one of them, obviously. The rest is just excuses and blown smoke. This would be easy to do without balance or exploit issues. Let's not forget the timers. lol

I understand what you're saying, and I agree that our mounts and ability to tame in the wild were indeed stepped on to prop up vehicles and clone pets.

The Devs said right after FanFest that they recognize those are problems. They said that mounts vs. vehicles needs to be re-evaluated. And that "one majorlyfun part of the CH profession was searching planets for cool pets. That needs to come back."

Actually, Vert, this was the role that was forced down our throats. You remember TH's comment about a Zen like taming thing that he did not understand? His vision of CH was "Dabblers" and weirdos that enjoyed roaming around the middle of nowhere looking for companions in the middle of a Galactic Civil War and refusing to group in a Massive Multi Player Online game. Funny irony there. They gave up on the GCW and created Jedi. Which tends to be a weirdo that has mindlessly grinded about every profession in the game, roams around in the middle of nowhere and does not group. ROFLMAO

The fun of CH was more than taming. Yes, that was fun and it one of the few things that is still fun for me. I made an alt character and became a MTK/MD in around 4 days. That character is still fun. Why? I provide a service that is needed and desired. I get alot of respect and invites to join PA's, groups, and cities. Basically, I rule for the most part in PVE and can hold my own and provide a valuable service in PVP. TKM is a favorite of the Devs. It takes less skill points than CH, has the ability to heal wounds and cure poison and disease plus give it self a boost. All this for 92 skill points to Master. All I get on my TKM/MCH is ridicule and requests to train pets for free because I alway have MCH title displayed. No, I am not calling for a nerf. lol

I have the perfect 19 questions question. Why is it perfectly acceptable to dabble in every other profession except CH. I can dabble a few trees of doctor to be able to buff only, cure states, heal wounds. I can dabble a few trees of TKA to be able to take care of posion/disease and wounds or have the ability to knock down and dizzy or do some very substancial damage. I can dabble a tree in weaponsmith to be able to make my own weapons. I can dabble artisan to get rich harvesting. It has not changed. People are now dabbling in three or 4 other professions for the FOTM. Dr makes money selling buff packs, wound packs, or stims to dabblers. BE's make money selling every thing they can do. Talk about a Dev Favorite.... They even got DEls nerfed before the fix went in. lol Most masters can make money selling to dabblers.

Another great questions would be why the Dev's so obviously play favorites. The Combat Medic is still reeking havoc in PVP. The Bounty hunters are in the same boat as we are. They kill the FOTM, Jedi, you know. The TKM and Rifleman are awsome for the point required. A swordsman can take out MCH with a level 70 pet in less time than it takes me to type this sentence. No, I do not want to see them nerfed. Yes, the combat balace is coming. It will go over like the crafting balance. The promise of a free ship will not keep me in the game if they nerf everyone but the Jedi as bad as we have been. I had it with the marketing people and did not get my one year picture reward, so, I am in a bad mood. ROFLMAO

Sorry for the whine, here have some cheese with it. lol
