So after being screwed by 3 straight publishes, Creature Handlers are finally getting *something* in return. I'm not sure what the whole "elite" thing is, but to me it seems that we can train our creatures to do specials ... even though they have had specials for a year now. I will withhold my judgement until I see what this is actually doing.
After the CU, where all my pets that used to hit for 330 - 340 were hitting for 85 to 340 or an average damage drop from 335 to 212.5 or 37%, and having pets I used to use were now holding invalid stats so I tried to respec them, not knowing that my level 50 Kimogila was going to soon be a level 79 Kimogila and I would never be able to use it again (I deleted it right after I saw the screw-ups of patch 19).
And then Patch 18 came out and my 1(0) Rancor that was the only "usable" creature I had after the CU (i.e. the only one that could hold agro) could no longer be called, and now if I respeced my animals with uber stats compared to their level, they would get dumbed down and have 1/4 the effectiveness they used to.
And then Patch 19 came out and one of the spider types I was trying to play with since patch 18 (a level 69) was no longer able to be called.
Well I was giving it until patch 20 to fix some of this shizznit before I called it quits. I guess the developers know how bad this is since we actually get our own hotpatch and they took the servers down to do it. I hope I can use all my critters again after this.

This whole "elite" thing will not affect pets you currently have (unless they are elite) and has nothing to do with taming or training. Some creatures in the game are what is known as an "Elite" creature. Their stats are much stronger then other creatures of the same level. These became very important after the CU because of how much the BE pets suffered in conversion and the changes made to the BE profession. Elite creatures quickly became the best pets in the game. A good example out of my data pad is my female narglatches and my kimogila. My kimo (Stretch) is a pre CU lvl 68 BE pet. Before the CU it had very good stats in both health and resistances. After the CU it converted to pretty much less then an average pet. Health went down to just under 7000, special attacks are gone (temporarily), and it's max damage was ok. Then I went out and tamed 3 female narglatches (Alex, Dylan, and Natalie). These are lvl 22 Elite creatures that have a health now of 7700! and individual max damages of only 40pts less then my kimo. So now since I can handle 3 of these at a time I effectively have 3.5 times the health called doing almost 3 time as much damage.
