As an old ch, i have returned, i used to play back before the cu, and now i need some tips as everything has been changed, first of all what is a good beginner pet for a novice ch? Second what skills do i need to be able to tame a rancor? (i heard lvls were changed therefore so would skill req). Last but not least, are the elusive bull rancors still so elusive? or are they less rare now.

Welcome back!

A lot has changed, yes, and the best place to start understanding it all would be to check out *READ THIS FIRST* New CH System Guideand A Guide to the New Pet System... these are excellent stickies on this forum that really help to explain the new system thoroughly.

There really is no set "best" pet anymore to start with- go out and tame a nice low level or have a BE make you a pumped up low level pet with high health to help you get through your novice boxes and get CH xp. Your skill sheet should still tell you what your maximum tame CL cap is.

Currently the "rares" are still the Great Plains Stalker, Stoneskin Hanadak, and Bull Rancor. There are others, but these are the three you really hear about a lot. Been searching for quite awhile and just found my Bull tonight. Takes lots of patience!

Anyway, be sure to browse those stickies- they're helpful! - and best of luck Once again, welcome back!

Well, xp from a kill is split based on how much damage you do with your pets vs. your other weapons, so I find it best to have your pets deal as much damage as possible (ok, duh, but still... ). Since creature abilities are tied much more closely to their CL, starting out that means use the highest pet you qualify for. Once you get Management 3, though, I think you do more total damage with two pets than one. For example, if I usetwo CL 30 pets (I'm currently 4444 going for master) together they seem to do more damage than a single CL 60 pet. More pet damage = more CH xp for the kill. Maybe BE pets would be different, I haven't really done much testing with those.

Based on the info at swgcreatures, the lowest level rancor is the gnarled rancor at CL 46, so you'd need around 3 full branches to be able to tame that. Although since creature levels are now visible without ranger skills, it's easier to tell whether or not you have sufficient "max pet level" skill to tame or not.

Not sure about bull rancors, I haven't gone looking since I haven't hit master yet. There's been a few posts about people finding them, although I can't say whether they're more common. In general, babies are a little easier to find on wild lairs than pre-CU. Although babies no longer spawn from mission lairs, so finding tames can be more difficult in low-spawn areas.
