In the manual I read about releasing a pet I also found some people talking about in the forums. Only I am not ably to do or beter said I do not know how to do it. It is not in the radial menu of the pet and "/release" has no effect. Or am I missunderstanding it complete and is "destroy" strange implementation of releasing?

Go to your data pad, click on a pet and select destroy, when it asks you are you sure say yes. You will get a message on screen saying you have released your pet.

It's a sick little twist of words joke that SOE is playing on you.

When you click on 'Destroy' in the datapad radial and confirm it by saying 'yes', it says, "you have released your pet." but what it doesn't tell you is that 'you have released your pet from it's miserable mortal existance' not 'back into the world to live amongst it's bretheren.'

At one time, releasing a pet actually made them, for a brief period, an object that could be seen in the world. You'd release them, and they'd become just another mob out there. You could, in fact, retame a creature that had just been released if it was still a baby (you couldn't get XP from it, but you could retame it).

Which meant that if you released an aggro critter, it would be just like any other aggro critter. I released a couple of fully grown scavenger vesps once, but they were "white" objects, unattackable.

In the fiction of the game, what you are destroying is the data in the datapad, the pet itself goes free in the wild to continue its happy little life, find others of its own kind, find a mate, raise young, etc.

Even though you cannot actually see the ex-pet doing that.

Yeah, but the whole "You have destroyed (Fluffy-muffikins) (data)" still seems like you're killing it.
