Alright...
First off I went to dath to get a couple half decent pets now that you can train MCH with the push of a button and I am a lazy bastage.
Mission was alright, as just a M Carb, MCH anda litte BH the lvl 79 rancors at the mission were easy enough to kill if you took them one at a time. Kiting with crippling shot seemed to be the most effective way, you don't even take damage if you don't want to. I let them beat up on me to see the damage they did, and it made me hopeful that it would be a useful critter once tamed. It was killing me almost as fast as I was killing it... ...seems pretty good so far.
Tamed a rancor, tamed a gnarled rancor... and let the magic of CU growing let them be their max level in about 5 min.
Went out after some gaping spider recluses lvl 81. Pet seemed to be doing fairly well against them, though it is impossible to actually know since we can't see their health... only problem is if you let the pet fight it, and it didn't die first, it would take about a half hour per mob. Also, don't try to speed it up.. one shot from you will peel the mob right off your pet and even if you sit there and take it without attacking the pet can't get it back.
So, meh... can take damage but you can't fight. Next I went to cnet to see how my new rancor would do against another player. I grouped with it so it said lvl 80 and asked a lvl 55 (lvl of rancor on pet lvl 50) if they would be interested in testing pet damage, they said sure.
We duel and I stand off to the side sending my pet in (it is grouped with me so it claims to be 25 lvls higher then her). Its attacks do 89 damage every time, with half of that being absorbed by her armor... so she effectively regens faster then a pet that should be near her lvl (even if grouping has no effect) can do damage. I was watching a CH fighting a lvl 80 player, his rancor did 50 damage, and the cu pa's off the frog (of which he had two out) both did 50 damage as well... they are lvl 10. The damage range on a rancor is 190-300 on a cu pa 90-190 (or close).
The only available explenation of why a lvl 50 (80) rancor would do 90 damage to a lvl 55 player is if they put the pet damage reduction back into effect. That plus the difference of 5 levels would explain the cutback from 300 down to 89 (89 is before armor remember).
So to sum it all up, pets as they currently are, are worthless for both PvE and PvP... go and test it yourselves, taming is fun but you won't be pleased with the results.

We are. We're being punished for playing a profession that the devs put into the game, but it was exploited and taken advantage of early on in the game's life, so the rest of us are being punished for it.
I hate the CU.

Great data here - thanks for the info. It looks like pets need some adjusting yet.
Oh, a suggestion on your issue of shooting once andacquiring the creatureshate. Try using a gun that has a lower DPS than the pet, even 1 point less DPS coming from youwill keep the Hate on the pet. It won't seem as if you are doing as much damage as before, but your pet can continue to Tank and double the speed of the kill at the same time. If the pet is hitting for 200 dmg every 2 seconds - pull a 99DPS gun out and shoot away....
