Yes that happend to me the other day. I was naming a bantha someone bought, The person wanted the name to be "Darkknight". I tried a few times with no luck. I then named it "Boo" just to see if it was the guys name the game didnt like. "Boo" stuck so we played around a few times with names and finally got one to stick. There must be a name filter or something similar preventing some names. Thats all i can come up with anyway.

There's a name filter, and also capitols can count against the name sticking. I have a gurrek I wanted to name Morgana, and it wouldn't let me. Guess it's too close to Organa, Princess Leia's last name.

Hmm - never really thought about the name filter, but I suppose that could be it, if you don't get any 'feedback' regarding disallowed names. Not sure what the filter hated about 'Rebel' and 'Major' (respectively) but then I suppose I could try getting round it by spelling them differently.....

exactly right! but its not that its close to organa, it actualy contains the name. pets are subject to the same naming rules that player characters are so names that contain luke, leia, vader etc are always blocked. for an example someone wanted me to name his mount Leviathan, np i thought, but after the 5th or 6th try it suddenly dawned on me: 'leviatHAN'! i cant use any name that has HAN in it!
theres usualy ways around it tho, just be a bit creative with the spelling.

The name filter can be a bit weird at times - probably as a result to trying to get around all those l33t tricks for slipping in obscene or inappropriate names.
Given what players are like I suppose it has to be very picky - and I have to say it does work (or we would have seen some pretty "inappropriate" pet names before now).
OTOH it's a shame that appropriate names like "Major" (my friend had a dog named that) are disallowed - probably on the grounds that it can be doubled with a surname ("Major Mistake", etc).
Weirdly, the name filter does allow some creature and place names through - I've seen at least one player called "Sharnaff" and another called "Coronet" (or maybe my client was playing up!)

Is anyone else noticing a problem with pet naming...?
I haven't named anything in a while (was playing catch & release and killing things for the XP for Creature Taming II for the last three days) - got trained this afternoon & set off looking for new pets. I tameda female grassland slice hound & tried naming it (planned to keep it). On the fourth successful train with name, no "(name?)" appeared. I tried again - reworking the commands - but it would not accept names.
I released it, and carried on. Got a mottled wrix, tamed & named no problem. Then I found a baby humbaba! Not rare I know, but I've never seen a baby yet, even when I couldn't have tamed it. Plus I want to ride it if I ever get as far as mounting skills
This also would not accept a name. I've checked - spelling correct, no 'extra' spaces that might throw it off. I have the baby stored, and I'll try again to name it when I log on, but I'm wondering if this is a known bug.
Anyone else ever had this problem?
