Its normal for your pets to do more damage when they're grouped with you. (assuming you're higher level than your pets)
That's the CU for you, there are CL damage modifiers that act in the favour of the higher level protagonist of a fight, ie, if you (or your pets) are lower level, their damage output is vastly reduced, if they or you are higher, it increases.
When you're all grouped, their effective CL is that of the player, not the pet. So their damage output increases.

Look at it this way:
When you were CL 23 (the level of your pets) if you tried to attack a CL 80 mob with a 100-200 damage DH17 (no idea if those numbers are accurate, but good enough as an example), you'd only end up doing maybe 30 damage due to the CL adjustment. You're attacking something 57 levels above you. If you then got into a group with a CL 80 player, your damage would jump up to 150 (not counting special multipliers) against the same mob. It's one of those screwy quirks that the CL system introduced.
It works the same way with your pets. Their damage is reduced when attacking a creature above their level. If you're grouped, their effective level is the same as the highest CL member of the group (usually you or another player), so the adjustment from the CL difference is removed.
When attacking mobs of your pets' level, do it ungrouped to maximize the training xp earned (although if your pet is more than 10 levels below you, you'll only get 1 CH xp). If you're attacking mobs of your level, group up so they don't get the damage reduction.
