My experience is that you get the same amount of xp whether you use 1 pet or 2... it just gets split into 2 parts if you use 2 pets (but if you add the 2 parts together the total is the same).

i would also like to know this. i am starting the CH grind (again) and was going to go for 0003 for the additional pet so i could grind faster.

CH XP is based off the overall amount of damage that is performed by your pet(s).
It doesn't matter if you use 1 pet or 3.

I was hoping to test this out last night, but got sidetracked by getting a few tames with new abilities.
I suspect that you may be better off with two pets if their total damage output is greater than what you'd get with one pet of your max controlable CL. The amount of CH xp you get for a kill is determined by the amount of damage your pets do vs. your weapon. The total of CH xp + weapon xp is going to be constant for a given mob type (or possibly CL category). If one CL 20 pet does more damage than two CL 10 pets, then stick with the single.
To maximize theCH xp split for a given kill, you want to maximize the percentage of damage done by your pets. If you're tanking for your pets, you could theoretically just sit there and absorb/heal damage while your pets do all the work and get all the xp as CH, but this usually takes forever and isn't really feasible for taking on more than one mob at a time.
(note: this is mainly just speculation right now on how the xp split works with CH, but I think it's a good theory)

I know of only one caveat to this... In my experience, you will only get xp for as many pets as have damaged the target. So, for example, if you are running three pets and you would normally get 3000 xp for a kill: If each pet does damage, you receive 1000xp per pet (or 3000 xp). However, if only 2 pets do damage and one gets confused or distracted and fails to engage, you will receive only 2000xp (1000xp per pet that damaged the target).
That's been my experience in the past. Can anyone confirm this?

Do not forget your pets are getting xp also. So if you use more than one then you will grow them at the same time.

I think this is the most important aspect at this time since CH xp is the same regardless. The pets *appear* to get full xp based on their CL vs the CL of the mob, so when grinding I tend to toss in an extra pet to learn my abilities faster and to mature the pets that need the xp.
