Thread: Another new bug, goody
Found a new bug (or a stealth nerf) fooling around today. Has to do with pets that use a ranged attack (and according to the DE forums, I believe it effects Probots as well).
For fun, I was going to killa Fambaa. Pulled out 3 of my low level ranged support pets (levels 15, 18, and 19), and grouped them. Ordered them to attack. Initially, they were doing a whole47 damage with their ranged attacks, woo. But, when one got into melee range, it started doing 237 damage. Now, that tells me that something is going on, but I figure maybe (wishful thinking) it has something to do with the Fambaa having high energy resist and low kinetic.
So, I go find another target. Trade Federation Avenger, that'll do. Same exact thing, all 3 pets hitting for 50 damage. Since he has a gun, they aren't going to willingly close to melee range, so I call one over to me and have him attack within 3m. Yep, now the damage is up to 240. Ok, I suppose there is a slight chance the energy resist is high on this one to, so I go find another target.
Nightspider, perfect. No way this thing has high energy resist. Attack..... 50 damage per hit, using ranged. Oh, wonderful. One gets into melee range.... 240. Very interesting.
One more target just to make sure..... Male Plains Tusk Cat. Same thing, 50 for a ranged hit and 240 for a melee hit.
This, in my opinion, is a bug. If its an intended thing, thats fine. It makes sense that a spitting creature would do less damage than using a physical blow (though it does destroy my CH strategy). But for goodness sake, its a pretty big change, document it. And don't let it effect the Probot, its using a gun, not spit.
Anyone else care to run some tests on this to see if this is accurate, or if its just me?

Any updates on this? I'd go experimenting again, but I'm going to see Ep-III instead![]()
Heh... good movie!
Finally got around to testing this outside Kaadara on a fambaa mission. My blurrg sand crawler ("ThingOne") did the same damage with his ranged attack as his melee attack. This was a post-Pub17 test, so maybe whatever you saw has been fixed.
Tested this more, and I've found something interesting. It would seem that this bug is exclusive to area's around Theed. I was on Corellia, and ranged damage was working correctly, as it was in wild area's of Naboo.
So I guess its not a bug dealing with pets, but with Theed in some way? Even around Coronet, which is more laggy than Theed, the damage seemed fine. I have noticed other things with Theed as well, sometimes I will send my pets to attack things and neither will take any damage, then after about a minute of both fighting with no damage, either my pet or the creature will disappear.
On a side note, I would really love for the spawnings to be fixed on higly populated servers. I am on Bria, and I can travel from one end of Lok to the other and see maybe 2-3 wild spawns. The rest are all missions. Naboo, Corellia, and Tatooine aren't much better. I spent an hour looking for a bloody Carrion Spat lair to train some mounts (since the BE pets can't be mounted, I may as well get a bit of business before everyone gets the free Kashyyyk mounts).

pet ranged attack are weaker than normal melee attacks. when a pet gets in melee range it will in a sense "unequip" its ranged weapon adn start hitting it for more. think of it as a person going from CDEF to power hammer
Well your almost righ............No not even close. The only difference between ranged and meele attacks in terms of damageis the damage type. Ranged is energy and Meele is kinetic, this is the way it has always been.

but when it comes to pets, since when have you seen a spider or scyk with a ranged attack shooting an energy attack? really. please tell me. otherwise my statement stands
I didnt say it made sense,I said it was how its always been. It has been this way pre CU we know because extensive testing was done against creatures with different resists and based on damage done it was determined that ranged attacks were energy damage. Ohh and if you turn on all the options for your combat spam you will see that ranged attacks are most definately energy.
Edited for typos

I'm not sure if this one falls under this general topic, but here goes:
Today an MCH/MBE challengd me to a duel in Kachirho. He wanted to test out his new fully grown BE kima. First we dueled the 68 kima against my 69 gaping spider hunter (natural tame). The kima won handily, mainly because it has a very nicer armor rating.
Then we did the kima on me. BTW, this was a BIG kima, about the size of a gurreck! I used a my master smuggler improved concussion shot to root the beastie down, and get away. The critter has a ranged attack, but it didn't touch me at all. Furthermore, once the root wore off, the kima stayed put exactly where I had rooted it. It's like the root was permanent for the pet.
So, bugged ranged attack on the pet, bugged permaroot on the pet.
Next duel I refrained from using a root attack. The kima took me down quickly. I was not wearing armor, but I don't think it would have made much diffference to be honest. The kima was getting several attacks in to mine, and the armor was doing a very nice job of taking out about 1/3 of my damage with a DL44XL that normally yields close to 375 DPS.
