Tivo the way I understand the process is that if your Vitality falls to 75% (ie, 75/100) the HAM falls to 75% (ie. 7500 for a 10K HAM creature). So I would not use a Vit pack right away as it will reduce the Vitality cap most likely by 1-2 points. I mean to say if you use the Vit pack your pet's vitality will be 99/99 or 98/98. Using the Vitality pack too often reduces the vitality cap. You will wind up with a 60/60 pet all too quickly. What I would try to do if it were me is find Vitality Packs with really great strength (25 or better). Using these less frequently and when your pet reaches an even lower number like 80/100. It saves money over time and reduces how quickly the Vitality will degrade into a useless number.

I, too, have discovered that once a pet loses vitality, even just 99/100, it's maximum is gone forever. Once you use a vitality pack, it reduces it's maximum vitality. What is worse is, that the pet will also lose it's maximum HAM and Damage. It is actually better to wait until the pet reaches somewhere around 75/100 to 80/100 before using a vitality pack. I had a 98/100 pet with 1200/1200 and 405-490 max dmg. but when I used the vitality pack, it brought it down to 99/99 vitality with 1100HAM and 400-490max dmg.
Not a major difference, but never being able to restore it to it's original condition is disappointing.
