I haven't been able to figure out soe/devs motivations... I cant understand how this game can be so brutally bad unless one of these two things were true. Here it is: Why does 'stay' cause the creature to follow me in battle, yet the idiotic creature doesnt follow me when im leaving the scene? Oh and my favorite command 'ranged' which essentially works, but theres a catch; it runs right up next to the creature to do it. Yikes! Its almost as if the program is written to go out of its way to get your pet damaged.
Simply stunning.

Most likely your pet was hit when you were by an area attack, that is the only time I see mine ignore stay. As for how close they get to the creature to use a ranged attack, that seems to depend on the creature they are attacking. It looks like measurements are from the center of the creature so large creatures are still considered a few feet away from your creature when they are side by side. This is also why small tanks and large beasts tend to run around alot, the two have vastly different attack ranges and both are constantly trying to adjust to the best range.

Greetings,
I too have this problem. There are moments when my pet will not stay regardless of how much I spam my "/tellpet stay" macro. The only thing I have had luck with is to ensure they stop moving before I give the command. It does not work all the time, but it works more often that way.
I rarely have trouble leaving battle with my pets if I spam the follow marco. It interrupts the pet's inclination to respond to new attacks. For me, it kind of works like the peace command. When my Angler starts running when two creatures are attacking her at once, I spam the follow key to get her to return. If she continues to run when attacking, I just have her stay while I finish off the beasts. Since I am melee only, it's sadly the only way I can help her.
Good Luck to All,

I have noticed the stay problem, I just roll with it now though. I just pretend my pet just wants in the action as badly as I do and to protect me.
As far as the range command... I honestly have never used it. I am Rifle/CH, so I use my pet for tanking and not dmg so I have never played around with range attacks.. might just have to do that.

Here's something I do, if you ain't in the heat of battle. You could always pet the animal till it sits down, then go in to the fray. Works most of the time.
