Let me start by saying that I'm pretty new to Creature Handling, but I've been around a while, and I've done my share of research here. My Wookiee CH is currently at 2-1-1-1, and I'm slowly working my way up the hard way (i.e. not sitting at Geo caves, etc. ).

After the revamp for Creature Handler a while back, the skill mods were all spread out through the entire profession, and not stacked in one line or the other like they used to be. This makes the Creature Handler profession very unattractive unless you're going all the way to Master. With only 17 skill points after Novice, you can only get one complete skill line at best, or three bottom-row boxes. No matter which way you go, you'll be using mediocre creatures compared to Masters, and you won't have many commands to teach them (might be okay with a pre-trained pet though).

If you're going to get your creatures pre-trained from a Master, then the most important thing for you to go after is Max Level of Pets mod, which dictates the maximum Creature Level that you can call and control. I believe that at Novice your Max Level of Pets mod is +12, and if you go with 4-0-0-0, your final mod will be +22 and you will be able to use vicious creatures. However, CL22 isn't terribly high; some wild CL22 creatures are Greater Desert Womp Rats (6500HAM), Mountain Worrts (5000HAM), and Razor Cats (7000HAM). You could do much much better than these if you commission clonedpets from a skilled Master Bio Engineer, so if you know what you're looking for and you get lucky you can obtain some pets that are very durable and will suit your playstyle.

To sum it up, if you're not interested in hunting down rare or unusual creatures yourself, and you just want a pet to help you out in combat by attacking or tanking, then your best bet is probably to go with 4-0-0-0 CH, find a Master Bio Engineer who can create some very durable cloned pets for you, and find a Master Creature Handler who will trainthem all of the commands for you.
