Thread: Do I need marksman?
Well I can.
The disadvantage is time though. Player weapons hit faster and harder than creatures can (good ones at any rate), so it will take you longer to kill things.
I've found I can solo any missions I can get (up to 15K or so) without using weapons (I have no combat skills at all) - but they do take time. Mostly just sitting around watching the fight!

I don't disagree with the time thing at all Mondo.
It all depends on what you are hunting for and your personal playstyle.
If you aim to max loot and make kills as quickly as possible then some sort of weaponskill is a must.
If you are prepared to kick back and be a bit more relaxed about it then it it perfectly feasible to still do the same level missions - it just requires more thought and takes longer.
The reason for foresaking weapon skills is to put the skill points elsewhere. In my own case, no weapon skills improves my scouting/masking/ranger skills, greatly enhancing my hunting/sampling ability as a Bio-Engineer.
The downside to that is that mass creature harvesting through hunting is not soprofitable (it takes time). As a result, if I want creature products I look for a mid-level lair and let the rancor chew on it for a bit, rather than head straight for the high-level meat warehouses.
That assumes you mainly solo. If you usually operate with a group then I've found that most people don't object to your lack of direct firepower since your pets provide a valuable meatshield.
