Thread: Learning Pet Abilities

Ok, first i'd like to state a few things:

I have progressed through creature handler (am 3 3 3 4) mostly from hunting first on coro and now on dant. I do do missions when I get close to a new box but generally wander and hunt/tame what I find. I point this out to clarify that i'm not a grinder by nature, I generally abhor the whole grind players but thats just my opinion and not the point of this post.

Anyway, I have managed to get some pets with l1 abilities which I dont have so have been hunting with them to learn them with no joy. I have learnt about 15 other abilities no problem so fvor a test I set up a little target/pet attack macro and set myself up outside coro by the meatlumps.

The 1st 2 abilities, learnt no problem so have tried with a couple other with no joy. Left it running all night and still nothing. Cant recall the names of the abilities as at work but can post later if it helps.

Is there any reason why some abilities can be learnt this way in a hour or so but after 8 hours others cant?

As far as I know the chance of learning an ability is "rolled" each kill, each maturity cycle increasing the chance.

Yes it appears totally random how soon you learn a skill. However I have also found that it is random that you actually get the message you learned it, a bug I'm sure. The innate skills (don't have a command) aren't going to show in the normal training dailog either since you don't need to provide a command. The only way I can figure out what I know at any given time is to have a fairly high level pet with an open training slot and do the /train command on it to list all the skills I know. I've had 3 L1 innate commands that I never got the message for but I have been able to figure out that I knew the skills and teach them to other pets with the /train list.

If you do a /train with nothing targetted you get a list of what you know

This is what i've been doing but the ability isn't showing up. I'll check this evening when I finish work but it's frustrating having to go through this and I doff my cap at anyone who actually hunts their way through all the abilities !!!

If you don't see it then you have not learned it yet.

I have learned most of my skills from pets that NEVER rolled over. I took them and killed yard trash till I learned the skill. Not a macro. Just standing there sending them out. Great fun actually cause on Tatooine most of the yard trash is bigger than my pets by a lot. You would see this little speck running thru the crowd and the big monsters would just fall down dead

Btw for those who do not know the command queue for your pet is at least 20 so target, pet kill command, target next, pet kill command etc for about 20 times or more. The pet will change corse each time then kill the last target and start working back thru the list to the first target.

If it gets a non-fatal hit on a MOB it will follow your pet around whacking it till the pet gets back to it on the list or the pet incaps

To add to this on-going story I got home and had been logged out. Ended up giving the whole macro a miss and went hunting on Endor. Had a fantastic evening (btw anyone on europe-chimaera there is a fantastic carnivore meat with OQ990 and other stats all over 700) and learnt the ability, got enough medical xp for novice CM and tamed a CL44 roba with a l2 ability (my 1st)

All in all a great evening, forget macro's. After my first foray into it I just cant b bothered with them.

As I said you get a small chance per kill even without rollover. The rollover increases the chance per kill making it more likely but you can get the skill first kill or you may have to wait for a number of maturity cycles it all depends on the roll of the virtual dice.
