Pets CAN eat any food, to heal wounds. They'll eat spice to heal wounds. They'll eat your synthsteak, your bivoli, they'll eat anything they can get their grubby paws on. Pets will eat anything you can eat. They will not drink any drink you can drink, though.
This is why a lot of CHs use bofa treats to take care of the hungries after a battle. They're cheap, they don't do much to buff the player, and they will heal up all the pet's wounds with a single bite.
The serious chef created pet foods, on the other hand, the ones that buff pets, must be dragged and dropped onto the pet from your inventory.
Now, if they're laying around in your inventory, and you feed your pet, and the swessonberry rolls or the blap biscuits are the first thing in the inventory (left to right, top to bottom) the pet will eat that NOT for the buff, but for the wound healing. Which is why all foods except the food you want the pet to eat for wound healing need to be stored in a cargo pocket, or in your backpack, where Fluffy cannot get to them. Otherwise your very expensive bivoli will be snarfed down by a kusak...or your muon gold will be gobbled by a merek.
The pet buff foods only work as buffs with the drag and drop method, which should result in the message (Fluffy) yummy!, and the pet is buffed up according to the food's stats.
Good BE enhanced pet foods can add 1000 points to your pet's HAM for 30 minutes, but because there's not much of a market for it, you may need to special order it from your neighborhood chef. The chef can alter some of the stats, like the duration or how much the buff is on the pet's HAM. Filling can be altered, but it's useless with pet food because the pet can only be buffed once an hour, unless you store the pet, and the buff timer is reset.
Chefs have four stats that the experimentation process can alter: flavor (which determines the duration of the food's effects), quantity (which determines how many servings of a food), nutrition (which determines how big the buff is), and filling (which deterimines how much space is taken up in your stomach by the food).
