I don't believe it as anything to do with line of sight. I find the NPCs, especially the Imperials, who are supposed to be an army, very lacking in intelligence. I can regularly engage one in battle with my pet without the others reacting. Of course, even at CL 76, I would lose to a mob of 10 Imps rather quickly if they fought like they should.

This is why I think Creature Handler as it stands right now has the best crowd control ability vs NPCs. Multiple pets can hold the mob's agro while only the one you attack will agro you. I've seen this work up through lvl 82 mobs so far. Works with pets of all sizes. May or may not be intentional on the side of the devs but it's pretty cool...one of the few things that does work for CH in terms of combat.

Last night I had 2 fambaas and 1 torton out and set them on a dozen stormtroopers. From 40m away, I couldn't really see what was going on. I inched around to the side where I could pick off visible troopers 1 by 1 and never encountered any resistance aside from the individual I was shooting at.
Any chance that the mammoth creatures' size is incorporated into the game somehow -- other than looks? That the troopers could not see me?
Has anyone tried this in PVP, to see if the animal blocks the line of sight of a ranged opponent, at least intermittently? Or, if not, is there a "confusion" element with such large beasts on the battlefield.
Just a thought / question.

I had a guildee go base busting the other day, and he said the NPC's were not resisting at all in way or form. Me thinks the AI is kinda messed up.
