This has been my experience with extensive creature tameing of abilities. Here are some quick pointers to help you get started and how I figure it works.

How to get all the abilities I want.

1. Tame often and tame everything nothing is not worth tameing, but be sure to be mindful of poor sellers and high sellers. Some critters like ravenous tortons pay out a large percentage of the time while a kinad baznitch pays out seldomly. In a simpler term its rarely worth takeing 20 minutes to tame a baznitch when you could be out tameing young reptilian fliers. Run a cost to benefit ratio to see whats more worth your time. Sometimes it hurts to pass up a roba baby right out there for you to get, but if it forks out once in 20 tries its not worth the time. Remember no ability is species specific or even group specific.

2. Find a hunting ground that suits your needs. Among my favorites are just outside of the mineing outpost on yavin west of the research outpost on endor along the seashore on talus. These are generally rich locals. Not only do they have alot of critters but they are easy to get too spawn many babies and mission lairs rarely lay in wait. This is good because you can tame creatures at a rapid pace.

3. Use modifiers and have a large stock on hand of almonds wear good clothes, and when at all possible use the radial tame from a vehicle. This is very important when tameing dangerous group attacking mobs its a quick exit and allows you to break agro fast.

4. Dont throw that away someone might need that. A very good rule of thumb is get some other ability seeking chs to help you in your quest. The facts are for whatever reason there are some abilities you are just not going to draw yourself. Because one guy got aggression off a rill dosent mean you are going to aswell. Trust me I know 300 rill tames later and nada. This is where friends come in handy. Coordinate with them. When you get a redundant ability you can trade it to them when they get a redundant ability they can trade to you. Aslong as the pet hasnt gotten xp its pristine and you can learn the ability. Not only is this about the only way to go but it saves alot of time.

5. Make the space in your datapad if you do not its going to take forever to get where you want a good rule of thumb is 8 spaces to work with. 6 for abilities you want to learn and 2 to hold redundants you can trade.

Now you got some pets in your datapad waiting to train up. Here are some helpful facts.

1. From my experience the pet ability system is a random generator combined with a modifier. Everytime you fight something with that pet you will get a roll a chance for the ability to be learned. You can learn a ability from a pet at anytime reguardless of xp earned per kill. Here is the modifier part the more xp the pet accumulates the greater the chance of learning the ability until the chance for learning becomes increadibly likely. A good measure is right after leveling up midway between leveling up. These seem to be hot spots. Technically you can kill garbage over and over again and learn pet abilities. The problem is this can take an exceedingly long amount of time. I generally level a pet up after about 100 kills.

2. Fast is beautiful as like all combat in the game the fastest way to ability up is in a group with seven other players be it dantooine yavin or wherever. A good rule of thumb level 78 missions are the bomb. Quick to die quick to get the xp. First find a solid group with high level players. Next go out on the missions when you arrive pull out a pet. Do not group it. Use the old tab a tactic. Note jedi spin groups are the best you get to hit all the targets relatively fast and get max xp the fastest.

Yes it is very worthwhile to trade I have a couple chs i like to trade with and it cuts hours off game time, and quite frankly some skills seemed to have been impossible for me to get. This is with thousands of tames of all beasts. So your looking to be a full master its the only way to go.
