As soon as you tame your pet if you look in your Datapad (ctrl-d) and click on the pet then in the lefthand side of the window you can see all your pets stats as well as any special ability it has if any.

If no special ability is listed then let the pet go and tame another until you find one with the special ability you want/need.

Once you have a pet with an ability THEN you train it to attack and use it in combat to kill things. Once it has either killed so many mobs -or- has rolledover it's Training XP a certain number of times you will get a system message flash across your screen that says "you have learned ability XXXXX from your pet".

You can check to see what if any abilities you have learned from your pets by using the /train command without anything targeted. A window will open listing all teh abilities you have learned.
