When you first tame the beasties do you see the innate abilties right away on the data pad? If there are none can I assume that the pet has none?

Hi, in answer to your question when u tame a pet if it has a special it will be displayed when u look at the pet in your datapad. examine the stat screen and scroll down it should say "abilities" and the particular spcial it has, assuming it has a special. A recent post implies pets might have a hidden special until this is further confirmed assume it to be a bug and dont waste your time grinding pets with no specials.
