You get CH xp when a pet attacks.
You get CH xp when you tame a baby pet.
You get CH xp when you train a pet.
Only for the most time consuming part making a pet a grow up well you get no xp points. I think it would be a nice way to gain xp when you get a pet fully grown.

Why should we get XP for doing nothing, but giving the pet a hug once a day?
If the pet growth system would be a bit more complex (i.e. the more you care the bigger and stronger it grows) then it would make sense, but right now I would say no.
