I picked one up while wandering around some time ago and never used him. Recently I've called him out and used him to supplement my TMB and he's worked pretty well for something that doesn't have armor.

I'd say yes.
My Angler usually does a good job tanking while I headshot the critters. I also have a couple BE pets, but that doesn't keep me from using tamed pets.
As long as you don't go for critters way above you skills an Anglerwill do fine.
