There are lots of rumors, but nothing definent. You could try everything from fighting with it, simply calling it out often, or playing with it, but no one has found anything that would indicate a definent answer to the question.

november 5th 2005- greatest hotfix ever
" you may now board shuttle while burstrunning, running normally, shuffling, walking, standing, sitting, prone, hopskipping, jumping, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOU MAY NOW BOARD SHUTTLE WHILE BREATHING!!!!"

i don't know if this is normal but i had a wasteland cupa go from lvl 1 to 19 in 3 days just by having him out and using him to fight.

I found having it out a lot helps a lot. I tamed 2 pets at the same time, and the one I called out more often matured quicker

in the past it has taken 3-5 days for a Level 40 or above pet to grow in my datapad without

even calling him out. However lately this has not been the case. I have tamed a Piket Plains

Walker baby and an Arachne Webmaster in the last 10 days. Both of them grew to full

size inside of my datapad in only one day. Something must have changed.

My GPS grew from a CL5 baby to CL25 in about 2 days. However, from what I've heard these do tend to grow up rather quickly.
