I'm not a good calculator and haven't been a novice CH since July of last year so I'll have to give you a shortcut instead

http://swgcb.yogn.net/swg-cb.php

Go there and enter your current skill level and view report at the bottom. It will tell you what your maximum CL pet is.

At novice you can handle CL12. You get +2 to CL for each box of the skill Tree in the first 2 rows, +3 for each box in the third row, and +5 for each box in the fourth row. You can go to www.swgcreatures.com and get all the information for the creatures you are interested in. A regular Rancor is CL 50. So, you would need all the boxes in the tree except 2 to tame and control it.

There is not Tree to go up. Unlike other professions, the CH skill tree was redone to prevent "Dabbling." So, the is no tree that really stands out. You can get BE clothes with +25 to Taming and Taming Vicious, so you might want to do that tree last. Your pet only needs to know one trick to heal his mind damage and wounds so Empathy 1 will hold you for a while. The group and guard commands are very useful and so is mount and some people like Management 3 to get two pets out. The total of both pets must be below your CL. Some people just go 1111, 2222, and so on because they get faster CL increases for the XP gained. Lower level boxes require less xp than the higher level ones. Some train the tree to get specific commands first.

You train your pet the same way that you tame it. Hold on the pet, after you call it, and a radial menu will pop up. Select train and then the command you want to train. Then when the ? appears you type the command you want to use. Say, attack or sic for the attack command. You will then get a message that your pet does not understand you (failed) or you teach your pet a new command. (success) If you fail the first time you just repeat until you succeed. To name your pet you need to be able to train 4 commands. You put the name you want in front of the command, fido attack. After 4 successful trains the name will appear. You can then retrain the pet without the name. If you do not retrain, you will have to type fido attack instead of just attack.
