How about introducing Breeding Cycles? These could function much like current resource shifts do or in an entirely different fashion.
Basically, once every couple weeks (or more or less frequently), different wilds would go through breeding cycles with the rarity of the creature affecting the likelihood and frequency of their breeding. Imagine how much fun it would beto get the message from a friend across thegalaxythat "supercoolcritter x" isbreeding! Effectively this could introduce a ton of really special rares and allow for each CH to chase after his/her dream pet. Why not add the ability to see if a creature is in a breeding cycle to the ranger knowledge window? Or it could be as simple as having a functional Tamable Yes/No toggle in the info screen.
Pros-
- It would keep rares rare, and keep extincts in the game to some degree.
- It would encourage people to occasionally leave the rivers of corellia or Rancor Valley on Dath. (GPS and BR)
- It would allow for each CH to have a shot at getting their dream pet! Personally I have always wanted to tame a "xxxxx" but will never be able to because they don't breed.
Cons-
- I would spend more time playing this game than I currently do (much to my girlfriend's chagrin).
- BEs and their level 10 8k Ham pets might get a touch ruffled about the idea of a CH's wilds potentially being more sought after than his high level pets are. Of course this wouldn't always be the case because the "Charging big daddy of mauling" won't be breeding all the time.
Personally I think this is in keeping with the idea of the CH profession and even the way rare animals work in the wilds. When an ant colony has a queen, there is only one queen. A new queen does not come about until the old one dies and a female then changes anatomically to become the new queen (baby queen). Or even the animals that have ludicrously long lifespans but breed super infrequently (land tortoises).
I know this is theory craft but I think that it would offer so much more excitement to a profession that we all truly want to work and love.
And yes, I want my stable to show off my critters.
Thoughts?

Hmmm, interesting idea actually. I like the idea, but(there always has to be a but) I think that this would ultimately make rares even more rare and if they bumped up the spawn rates, they wouldn't be rares anymore. You would just have to wait until they start spawning, tame a few, then wait until their cycle's are over and sell them for a king's ransom to the highest bidder and hope they don't start spawning again for a month or 2 while you are trying to make a quick buck. I think it would ruin the rarity of the rares in the long run. If we kept the rares the way they are, and did this for every other creature under level 50, then I could see this working. That would atleast open up a lot more creatures to tame for everything 50 and lower and still keep the rares as hard to get pets.

Yeah, had this kind of idea too. Would love to see a breeding cylce.

I think the answer to the "common" rares thing would be to keep the frequency of current rares the same either by not changing their status or by adjusting the breeding likelihood of individual creatures. Point being we could have a situation where the Bull Rancs and the GPS's are as rare as they are now, but in addition you will have CH's who get to tame their favorite animals. This will breed (pun intended) diversity into the CH population. I think the numbers need to be looked at, meaning what would everybody want to be the rarest cycles vs the common cycles vs the impossibly rare cycles.
I am not thinking about the numerical mechanics of this at all, but I definitely think it is a compromise between the two camps that want their extincts to be super rare and the new players that want a chance to get a few of their _own_ super rares, not the super rares that every CH is currently looking for.

It's an interesting idea that has come up before.
Wouldn't players need a way to determine whether a current pet is "breeding" at any given time, though? Otherwise people might go nuts spending tons of time searching, only to later discover they had a 0% chance that month.

well, if in fact all animals < 70 become tamable, and something like this were implemented as a result, i believe the tamable mod would become largely useless for obvious reasons.
remove the tamable mod for anything > 70, and for anything < 70, replace it with a "mating season" mod. will indicate Yes/No based on whether it's during a current mating season for that particular animal(ala baby spawns).

There could be a list on Terminals on each planet, listing the animals that are currently in their breeding season...make the season shift every month so its like 1/4 out of all the animals CL70 and below are breeding at any one time. This would give variety to catching spawns, and it would shift creatures like they shift resources.

It would certainly add more DEPTH and CONTENT to the class and game. I think it is a good idea though, it woud give us something to think about as far as timing the hunt and where what breeds and when , how often and how many young are born.

Vert,
I think that something could either be added to the ranger skill list to allow them to detect whether or not something was breeding and therefore tamable, or it could be as simple as having a fully functional tamable toggle. When an animal is breeding, Tamable - Yes is toggled, when it isn't, tamable - No is.
Aladine,
I think that the terms are an alternative but for me, I get very weary of using terminals for missions alone. My favorite way to hunt is to pop out a pet or two, (or 3
my harvesting droid, and just wander around seeing what I can see. My preference would be to leave the terminals to the city folk
Crim,
Thanks!
Hey nice squill by the way

very cool idea! and i too think that determining when a pet is breeding is either the job of the ranger and/or possibly the bio engineer, due to them spending vast amounts of time sampling
