I finally made Novice CH (after a LOT of hunting..!). So, now I need babies - but of course, I can't find any, whereas before, I was tripping over them, even close to Coronet...
Tried again - wandered out into the grasslands & found a lot - slice hound babies, krahbu babies, wrix babies, humbaba babies. According to SWG Creatures (assuming I'm reading the table right) all within level 10, and so supposedly tamable for a Novice. But no - I mostly get a flat 'You can't tame that', sometimes a trial 'Easy' then the 'You can't tame that' time after time.
So, what am I doing wrong? Am I reading the level incorrectly? Am I not persevering on the one's that do seem to let me try? Any help (and suggested species) would be much appreciated!

okay, here's the biggest problem with most novice CH's. At this point, you can not tame vicious creatures, even if they are babies. Vicious being those that show up red on your radar when they are adult.
Slice and wrix's I belive are vicious, the other 2, I am not sure of. what you might want to do, is go back to SWGcreatures and verify what are vicious and what are non vicious, then go from there.

Some of those are aggressive, and even if the CL is below your maximum, you will be unable to tame the creature if its aggressive until you have a bonus to taming vicious creatures instead of just wild creatures (which is the distinction made in the CH skill progression tree). So gain a box or two of the first branch and you'll have a small bonus to taming aggressive creatures, otherwise look for some low level non-agressives. Additionally be careful of the names of the creatures because any difference in name denotes a different creature in terms of CL, aggressive/non-aggressive, stats, ect. For example on Tatooine there are 'lesser dewbacks', 'dewbacks' and 'mountain dewbacks' and for some creature types there are differences in the 'male' and 'female' creatures also ('male slice hound' and 'female slice hound' are considered two different creatures).

start with dunri's, carriot spats, etc. My first pet was a kaadu named Ducky. He is also my mount. Even a Crapper Spineflap has babies under CL10 that you can tame and use.

I'm grinding CH myself right now. As a novice you can only tame up to a lvl 12 creature. Also, any babythatred cones as an adult you won't be able to tame until you get CH 2,0,0,0. So until you get higher I think the only things around Coronet you'll be able to tame are little guys like Ikopi, Wynocks, Vrelts(NonDiseased Non Noxious), Durnis(Non Crazed). I know you can tame other animals that are a bit higher but I don't have a list handy. Try SWGCreatures.com for a more detailed list. My only other advice is join up with one of the non-solo Sharnaff hunting groups and take your critters with you. A level 10 gives you~450 CHXP per Sharnaff just remember that it can't take much abuse so hopefully you can tank some of the abuse long enough for your critter to get in the one hit it needs to get the XP.

Aha, that does make sense - two of these WERE red as adult, though the humbaba & krahbu were not. Still, worth a try to find vynocks, paralopes & durnis for now, and worry about the others for later.
Thanks for all your advice.

You should be able to tame wrix babies from the getgo, as wrix are non aggro. Of course, don't try a mottled wrix. They're aggro.
Likewise, only grassland slice hounds are aggro. Regular slicehounds and female forest slice hounds should be within your grasp.
The wrix is on one of the classic starter CH pets. They're fast, they're next to fearless, and they're cute. What more could you ask for?

Heh i remember my first tame, it was a puny little paralope from the outskirts of Cnet, but i was so proud!
And what worked for me the best when starting out was just taming, taming, taming my little trandoshan butt off until i could tame lvl 14-16 creatures, when they have enough HAM to actually fight. In fact i still use my lvl 16 female swamp tusk cat named Nova the majority of the time when i go hunting. I also got taming clothes ASAP (started with a +12 shirt and +24 pants to get the total maximum of +25) to help tame some of the harder stuff.
Also i have a question about rori - I'm on starsider and whenever i go there (which is often because i love the planet and have a house there) i hardly see ANY mobs. Like driving back from my house ~1800m away from narmle i might see one natural lair spawn, if i'm lucky. This has always happened for me, so its been going on for weeks. I have traveled around to other cities (player and non-player) and i still see the extreme rarity of any creatures in the wild. Why arent i seeing a mess of red dots like everyone else?? Talus and every other planet i go to has tons of mobs, its just rori that is so empty. I spent the majority of my time in beta (heh good times) on rori and thats when i fell in love with it.

How many player cities are there on your server? Here on intrepid there is only 1 player city and you hardly find a bunch of houses (thats the reason i actually hate corellia and other crowded planets, you cant go 1 km without crashing into a house). Sometimes i cant move 100 m without a baby popping up and then there are areas where i can ride 3 km on my swoop and absolutely nothing spawns.

Once you have some vicious taming mods and a couple of commands to train (10+), get a +25 taming wild/+25 taming vicious clothes and a +15 maskscent clothes. Hop on the next shuttle to Rori and tame it empty. I did yesterday over a couple of hours 2 III boxes and today 1.5 IV boxes (200k xp). Most of the stuff there is max. CL18 and vicious, but you find usually out of almost every lair 1-3 babies without the need to kill the adults and tapping the lair. I just tamed everything, trained and deleted right away. Maybe not the fastest XP, but good and you might find some nice little critters for your datapad there. For grinding training XP i just use the same command for all other commands. Usually takes me 1.5 mins to taim, train and delete.
I have only like 220k xp till master CH left now, will finish it tomorrow
Only thing is i need 10 AP more to train master, think will get one of the first scout boxes with my alt, so i can get the 10 AP

Well, I thought I'd log in for one last bash before turning in for the night, and hit a winning streak - in 45 minutes, I tamed:
a carrion spat (as my first ever creature, I'll keep her & maybe get her trained as a mount when grown)
a krahbu
two vynocks
a paralope
Perhaps I should buy a lottery ticket tomorrow..!!
Thanks for all the tips - especially the one about taming clothes. I've been to Rori, and it was a mass of red dots, but if the baby ratio is higher it will be worth trying later on.
