If so how much? Is it enough where a creature handler would be nothing but trouble to a hunting group?

I don't have the answer to the xp taken away by the pets if any.
But you have to consider the circumstances when you need your pet in a group.
I.e. as a tank or as a damage dealer.
Unless there is no one to fulfill these roles in your group then in most cases if you are lvling your pet, you would not want to group them anyway (On the assumption the pet is lower lvl than the highest lvl player in your group)
The other thing is with the shear range of pet abilities there are, there is no one "single" profession which has all these combat abilities. In terms of range of combat abilities only the combat medic is in par, but unlike the combat medic, you yourself don't need to be in melee range of what you are attacking.
Thus do not look down on yourself in a group. These recent changes helps make a developed CH fill in the utility role in the group as outlined in the CU vision. (Thats assuming all the CH abilities work)

I was grouped with my pet last night and I was earning the same amount of XP as I was before pub 22. If a pet did count I would think I would only have earned half of what I had been earning.

The concern is mainly on ungrouped pets, like you can't always group a pet in a hunig group because only 8 people can fit in one

I did not notice any difference in XP earned while hunting with an ungrouped pet either.
