it does help them, it cures wounds, some of which can be rather substantial.
also, the pets will get NO benefit from foods or spices other than curing them of wounds if 'fed' to them. You can buy pet buff foods for them, however, and drag it on them.

Yeah and good luck finding those buff foods. They require the most insane amount of components out of any food.
Sweesonberry rolls -
20 Oats
20 berries
2 Bantha Butter (20 milk, 5 fruits)
1 Pastebread (20 wheat, 10 oats, 10 water, light additive)
Heavy additive
So let's add that up, for one crate of sweesonberry rolls (3-4 per uses per unit):
750 oats(2/3rd needed at quality)
500 berries(quality needed, expensive)
500 milk(hard to find in quantity)
500 wheat
250 water
125 fruits
one crate of ident. light food additives
one crate of ident. heavy food additives
just the additives alone will cost you an average of 30,000 per crate. so figure the minimum you should be able to find a crate of sweesonberry rolls for is about 100,000, considerring the current markup in the galaxy and the high demand/low ouput of these treats we will assume a markup of ....300% (about what you pay for a crate of brandy btw) then you should expect to pay between 180k to 350k for a crate of this stuff. Again they stick it to us. No other food ANYWHERE requires such insane amounts of stuff to make it.

If you got the skillpoints available. Which in all likelihood you will after the CU. Invest them survival 1. Get yourself the forage command its by far the easiest way to go about it. When your pet needs food just forage up some grub for it. After that the best option is to buy pet food in crates last plenty long and is not inventory intensive.
Always a good idea to just feed pets when they say they are hungry. It cures wounds but incrementally. So unless you are in the mood to end up feeding your pet over and over again. Same basic principle of healing your own wounds. Do you just let wounds pile up. No you do not when the opportunity arises that you are going to go afk for a short period you go afk in a med center or a camp. Its always best to handle the need as it comes up.

click on the radial menu on them and wait for a 'feed' option. it will cure wounds. WARNING! They WILL eat anything you have in your inv, spice, and food wise. They do not touch anything in pouches/backpacks or drinks. I believe, they eat the last food item in your inv. So, if you want to feed them, keep your good food in pouches. Forge for stuff, or get cheap chef foods for them.

too bad spices have no effect on them besides feeding them. Also you do not have to feed them but feeding them does help them when fighting. I usualy just have my artisan make some traveling biscuits and feed them that.
