Imagine that all creatures and babies found in the wild do not have totally fixed stats but instead individual variation on each stat based on a normal distribution with the current static stats as base, that is apply the normal distribution on top of the current stats. The extremes would be rare and finding a creature with all good stats would be very hard.
Now about the breeding; If you happen to tame two creatures of the same species of opposite sex your should as a Creature Handler be able to make them breed and thereby mix their stat pools, possible creating an even better specimen if its parents was of exceptional quality. The offspring would of course be affected by the normal distribution variation also, but based on a possible higher starting point (the mixed stat pools of the parents).
Breeding takes time so a single breeding would only be possible every XX days based on the level of the parent creatures, that is a delay timer for the mother creature, the male should be able to participate in other breedings. It could also be a requirement to keep the mother out of combat during the pregnacy.
The above described change would make combat against monsters more interesting because all of the same species would not be the same, making it possible to meet a single one with high resist... the thougher "brother".
At the same time life would be much more exciting for the Creature Handler... finding the perfect breeding stock... and making perfect breedings.
The above changes would not really unbalance SWG due to the normal distribution and would allow CH's to get pets in a natural way that could rival the power of BE pets.

A novel idea that would certainly be enjoyable, perhaps if Corrals are ever implemented this would be a fun progression from that (breeding farms ?).
Can't see it ever happening though, the coding would no doubt be a nightmare and it would devalue what BE's have to offer the game.

Agreed. An interesting idea, but I'd rather have the corral type thing.
Look at it from the BE's perspective: We sell two things, tissues and pets. If a CH can tame or breed a pet for free, thats just as good as a BE pet, then nobody will buy pets from us. This leaves us with only tissues to sell. No crafting professionlacks schematics (sp) for goods that are sold directly to the consumer, and no crafting profession only sells to two other professions. It would render BE more useless than it already is. Well, not useless, limited.

It would devaluate BE a little, but notice that a BE would have a lot more control of the result, so I am not sure it would mean that much. Breeding would be a long slow process for the people who "cared" (BEs no offence intended :smileyhappy
about their pets.

Only if it lets me breed a golden carrion spat that walks on water and has terrain navigation +500. Oh wait, I did that in FF7 ^_^ that kept me playin' the game.

i dont think the BEs would have a higher degree of control over the pets they produced... BE pet crafting aint like any other crafting.. u dont just go 'hmmm i think it should have more health.. whack a few exp points in 'health' and viola exactly how i want it'
creature stats for BE are weighted across 3 (normally) of the 5 dna samples used... so although health is mainly based on the dna used in the physique slot.. it is also affected by other dna samples
in the system described above you could b a lot more certain of your final outcome (and without having to learn complex forumlas etc)
eg
Pet A has high HAM but low resists
Pet B has high HA but low M and resists
outcome is likely gonna have high HA, medium M and low resists
also consider that although in direct creature comparison BEs can make better creatures.. the creatures we can make are all average or below for their CL... no matter how good a pet we make there is always a creature out there at the same CL that is better
I am master BE and CH 2222 so i can kinda see both sides of the argument..
i think CH should be thought of more as the training and usage of pets.. as a master BE u get absolutely no bonus to combat... as a MCH u get 3 pets up to combined
CL of 70... even at 2222 i tend to mask up and send in my 1 CL28 pet to do most of the fighting... im normally in caves surrounded by buffed ppl in full compo.. while im wearing a maskscent shirt and pants and no buff (maybe some brandy so i can use pet stims continually)

from what i can see CH r better off than BE.. BEs sell pets that are inferior to tamed pets of the same CL and they sell tissues that use difficult to find resources (you try getting 20k of egg or milk or mollusk or fish meat) to only 2 proffessions.... whereas CH can tame the very best creatures for each CL, know exactly what CL they r gonna get, can reliably acquire a stock of pets useable by anyone (getting a BE pet to CL10 is probobly the biggest challenge in the whole game) and get a massive amount of combat backup
If CH want more variety in their proffession a better method in my mind is to add milk and egg yields to creatures and be able to put pets in farms where a steady supply of egg/milk/meat can be gained

My point was really not to make BE life miserable but instead to add a new dimension to the Creature handling profession.
The combat value of pets (especially in PvP) is rather limited.Me also being a Master TKA... im usualy the one tanking my pets and not the other way around. Ican assure you that a bull rancor dont last many seconds against a buffed TKA.
The big difference between a BE created pet and a breeded pet would be time... Breeding takes a lot longer the gene manipulating and force growing. So for a high level pets you might only be able to get one offspring every second week or so and there would be no garanties for a superior pet.
I dont know for sure whether BE created pets are inferior to wildly caught pets, but if thats the case I hope the Devs will give the BE profession some love.
BEs do have one thing going for them moneywise... they can sell tissues and pet stims... a Creature handler has really not much to trade... non CH can only use up to level 10 pets and who needs those... a level 10 combat droid kick there a.. of a pet every time. So CHs could sell pets mount... but speeders are very superior to those.
Anyway still would like to see more variation in pets and creatures in the wild...
Kind of like your Farm idea... just add a "drop" of breeding
