I'm considering going Master Rifleman/Ranger, and putting my remaining 18 points into Creature Empathy 3. My question to you is this. What level pets will I be able to control, and in your opinion, is it worth the points? I'm mainly interested in something to guard me while I snipe at range.

As it is right now CH isnt worth any ammount of skillpoints put into it. But if you want to I would suggest getting either 0/40/0 or 0/0/0/4

Put them all into training to get the highest call level you can and to get the most stored pets you can.
Unfortunately, you'll only be able to reach a call level of 19, which gets you a full sized dew or a wasteland cu pa.

I must have misunderstood something then. I was under the impression that the +19 stacked on top of a bonus that non-CH already had, which I thought was around +10, allowing me to handle a creature of 29 difficulty level. I guess I was misinformed.

If you check the skill boxes you will notice they go up something like max lvl+1 or +2..., its this number you add to nov ch+12 so you would want to add the 4 boxes up and add that number to 12 for max pet lvl you could use.
Creature handler is fun and you may enjoy the mounts with ranger, have you considered some medic skill instead of ch?
the points used on med use would enable you to use stim c's or maybe d,s it might be better if combat is something you do alot.
ch would be useful for exploring and having a lvl 19 tank might give you time to escape a tough enemy,
choice is yours either way have fun and welcome to ch if thts what you decide :-)

Medic is a nice choice for wound heal, but here is the deal he already has ranger level camp that has a nice passive heal on it. He is also a rifleman quite counterintuitive. I am assumeing he wants a bodyguard which makes alot of sense if he plans to unbuff hunt. He aint going to be able to control a large variety of pets, and does not intend to use them as a primary offense. So he should go up the empathy path. Unless he wants to track down a ch to train the pet in trick command. I think he could do well with a handful of pets.
It did not use to be the case that your medic skill affected your stims, but now indeed it does. So you also need to count in with novice medic he will only have three points left over. Hardly enough to scratch the skill. He would not even be able to get to firstaid to stop bleeds, and he would have a point left over. So unless he decided to sacrafice some of the ranger for more points its not really a option.
I feal his dilema. I too am looking down this tunnel. I need to sacrafice some ch to get enough medic to be satisfactory atleast four or five boxes, but if I sacrafice my medic I would have enough points to master ch. I just cannot bring myself to do it. I am really dependent on stims since I am a master bh and have the ham eating llc. If I am not buffed and want to lay out serious destruction. I just got to do it. Plus word is that the combat upgrade will come in three parts. If the buffs get the serious nerf I hope then I will need it. If the buffs do not get nerfed. Then I plan to just drop it.
He definately is in a pickle here, and while I hate to say it. He should probabally be better off discarding the ranger, or atleast trim it back.

Ranger is costing me a TON of points, obviously. My other option is to go Master Rifle, Master Pikeman, 0040 Pistols, and 2130 Medic. I was hoping the Master Ranger, and 0030 CH would give me enough points for a viable guard pet, but it doesn't look that's going to be the case. Thanks for your input.

Just get a BE pet. Youll be able to have ar1 and 60% kinetic resists on one of those monsters even at lvl 19

true nov medic would soak up 15 pnts, thats all i keep is nov medic makes healing pets quicker using pet stims and stim b's lol
a Bio pet would be the best pet as far as protection went, one thing I have noticed with BE pets is many be's dont understand what a ch want in a pet. (dont flame me, on my server the pets you usually see for sale have 40% and under kin, even on higher lvl pets). the 60% kin might be hard to find but joker is right, find a BE and ask for something close to your max lvl (19) with high kinetic 60% is max shoot for that mark.
ad again as I sai above a ranger might enjoy the mounts while exploring
