What name are you trying to assign? There is a naming filter for pets, but it doesn't provide feedback to the user. If it doesn't like the name you're trying to assign, it'll just refuse to change it. The filter can be very picky about names from Star Wars continuity too (even when they appear as part of a larger word).
For example, "Chandler" would probably be rejected due to the word "Han" in it.
Correct, but you can name a pet Ben with no problem whatsoever. Go figure. You can't use Princess, but you can use Prncess, like my little Huurton Huntress.

Ah, Ben does work? That's very surprising. I'veheard of itrejecting some pretty esoteric stuff (like the one guy who was trying to name his pet "Concorde"... which most likely was rejecting due to Padmé's decoy from the beginning of Episode II: Cordé)
But yeah, any kind of formal title (Princess, King, Duke, Count, etc)would also bea filter no no.
A friend wanted to name her wasteland cu pa "Kingy" which was rejected. So she named it "Kaiser" instead. I wonder if Caesar would work...

I believe so far all reponses are right on point. I once tried to name my Giant Crystal Snake "Leviathan", after Leviathan in the FF video game series....game just wouldn't let me do it. I believe some names are blocked out. Why that particular one but other names of my pets like Prometheus, Copernicus, Anubis, Osiris, etc, (other figures from ancient mythology) are not blocked out.
I believed after that, that profanity was likely not allowed in creature names, but lo and behold, a friend of mine has a Thune named 'B*ttbaby'.
Don't know what the reasoning is for blocking certain names for creatures, all you can do is try and name it. The game will either take it or it won't. *shrugs, wishing he had a better explanation*
Good luck.
If you want to get into the niggling details, your friends Thune is vulgar but not profane. Profanity is typically religious like "God damn it"whereas vulgarity is merely offensive.
Also, I believe Leviathan is a reference from the Old Testment. It's possible the Devs saw fit to block Christian names with which we in the West are most familiar but not to block the Greek or Coptic references you mentioned. There's a clause in the EULA which pertains to character names and I believe the same guidelines apply to pets. No historical, religious or copyrighted names.
I'd be curious to see if Enoch or some of the more obscure apocrypha are also banned but to do so would be to intentionally mess with the CSRs which is in itself punishable.
I did however successfully create a character named "Genitals Malone" on Test Center once.

I name my pets all from mythology, such as Cerberus and Scylla. Most pets, as the saying goes, look like their name. So if ya have a big ol' honkin' Rancor, maybe you should name him Thor or something like that.......instead of Bob, lol.
But I like my Rancor to go by the name of Jill. I think it fits in a perfectly non explanable way

Actually if I were to make a guess, I'd say Leviathan was being blocked due to "Han." Leviathan
Maybe somebody needs to try the "Leviatan" variant on the spelling to confirm. If you're right then the naming filter is even lamer than I had hoped but about as bad as I expected.
On Starsider we had an Austin Powers for a long time and awhile back I ran into Britnie Spearz on Endor. *shudder*
Used to have a Microsoft Windows on Eclipse.
