I'm confused.
If I have a Shear Mite Soldier cl70 with Thick Skin lv3 - ( unused til I know this answer)
Does it inherently have the lv 3 Thick Skin ability that it can use??
Or will I have to train it with lv 1 and 2 anyway, before it applies bonuses?
I would of course rather keep the ability slots for other offensive specials, so I am hoping it already benefits from the Thick skin 3
cheers

If I understood the system correctly, your pet should have the effects from Thick Skin L3, but not from L1 and L2.
So yes, it has a Thick Skin ability it can use, but it will be worse than a pet that has Thick Skin L1, L2 and L3, since they add up.
Feel free to correct me if I am wrong though ... someone proving me wrong would quite change some of my pets templates

the CL70 shear mites (soldier and reclusive) have usualy an armour rating of 4800 (=48% damage reduction).
i tamed a CL70 shear mite soldier with thick skin 3 too. according to my testing the thick skin L3 gives it an armour rating of 8000 (56% damage reduction). so thick skin 3 gives a +66% bonus on armour rating it seems.
a pet with an innate ability (level 1 to 3) already uses this ability (like the soldier above). only if u want to teach a level 3 ability to your pet u need to teach level 1 and 2 before. the exception will be if the pet comes with a level 2 ability - then u can train the level 3 ability right away.
