Thread: How does Critter Area Attack work, exactly?

Hey all my fellow Dr. Doolittles,

I picked up a Bull Rancor with one of the L3 "Frenzied" specials so I figured I'd kill two test birds with one stone.

1. See if killing lvl 1 yard garbage really releases the special to me.

and

2. See how the Area Attack works on the Rancor.

So I started pounding away on the small stuff just south of Coronet. Butterflies, meatlumps, whatever.

It has yet to release the special to me, but I'll keep going...but here is my question.

What triggers the animal's area attack? Most times I got the "..with natural weapon has caused.." message in the combat log. But occationally I would see "...with natural weapon area attack has caused..."

Now is this a situation where the area attack only activates if multiple opponents are in combat? I seem to remember this being the case a while back with grenades and such, where if you a threw a grenade at, say, a meatlump and he had 4 other meatlumps within one meter, they took no damage unless they were already in combat with you.

Is this the same thing?

Any help would be great.

I think its random.

Anakin: Master, I think my lightsaber is getting dull. Its not doing nearly as much damage as it used to.
Obi-Wan: O.k. when we're done showing the youglings around the temple, we'll stop by the bazaar and you can buy a new crystal. I hope you've got a couple million credits saved up for this.
Anakin: WHAT?!!?? I don't have THAT kind of cash!
Obi-Wan: Well you could try sharpening it on these younglings. I've got a headache and all their questions are driving me NUTS!
Anakin: hmmm.... Sharpen my lightsaber on younglings...... hmmmmmm.....
Obi-Wan: uh, that was a joke Anakin. I'll spot you the cash for a new crystal THIS time, but next time you're on your own.

it must be random - and there is a max number of targets effected i guess. i had my bull rancor take on some of the low level critters near mos entha. there are always packs of 25 creatures. sometimes they stand really packed. i noticed that the aoe-attacks are random (sometimes 3 aoe in a row - sometimes 3 single attacks) and that it kills i think a maximum of 6 critters when i remeber correctly - even if there are more standing just nearby.

The area attacks seem to have poor accuracy and only draw attention if they hit from the little I have seen them used. That might be why it was only aggroing a few creatures despite being in the middle of so many. Or there could be some sort of cap if that is not really the case.
