Thread: Grouping with Noobs?

My husband just recently started playing SWG on my server, and the other day, he was approached by a high-level CH who had his pet "friend" my husband's toon, then told my husband to group with it. When my husband asked why (after a bit of a heated exchange, because he's heard me griping about vets taking advantage of new players lately), the guy told him that when he groups his high-level pet with a low-level toon, the pet gets xp for killing low level mobs.
Picture the big, fat question mark over my head right now.
Here's what I don't get:
1) If you group your CL 48 pet with a CL 5 toon - it doesn't backwards translate, does it? How is the pet going to get xp for CL 1-5 mobs?
2) If you group your CL 48 pet with a CL 5 toon - doesn't that screw the CL 5 toon out of any xp for mobs below CL 48?
Can anyone explain this to me? I feel like this guy was trying to take advantage of an unsuspecting noob... but I can't figure out if that's it, or the guy is just lazy, or if it's really no big deal.

2 things.
1. Not everyone is out to get you
2. No this in noway effects your husbands XP, in fact it probably actually helped it.
1. I never said they were. I was asking for clarification.
2. So you are telling me that if a level 5 toon groups with a level 48 pet, the level 5 toon is going to get full xp for killing a level 5 mob? That's all I want to know. It seems to me that he would have to go out and fight a level 48 mob to gain full xp.
There's really no need to be this defensive. I wasn't attacking anyone.

That is correct. Pets always take on the level of whoever they are gouped with and never the other way around.
Before the new pet abilities were introduced, this was a severe hinderance. But now, many see it as the best thing to happen to this profession in a long time.
No he wasnt abuseing your husband I used a similar strategy when I did scout. I got behind a brawler and tossed wire meshes non stop i got xp and the traps made the creature weaker. Infact I was constantly looking for how to solid up the noob so they took as minimum risk as possible.
This nonsense though seems to be a bug issue a loophole if you will one thats soon to get filled in. Remember the devs want us doing the new system for many months not a week. In my oppinion though the first time someone masters all these abilities and comes on and says they got nothing for it the interest will dwindle pretty fast.
The truth of the matter is that a pet should only be able to group with its master, and the fact that it can group with another was a nice thing to help out noobs at one time. Here control my pet I am crafting stims in the medcenter just dont go too far, or in instances where a packmaster opted to spread his pets among his group members. Now its obviously being abused. Which is the shame a good function/ ability will most likely get removed because some people were irresponsible.
The truth is the entire grouping matrix needs looked at. Grouping should be needed by noobs to get going through the mid levels by the 60s 70s 80s. There should be worthwhile xp giveing content not mission based. This great function of group xp bonus has backfired to the point where being in a group is required to progress unless you are a level 70-80. At which point the devs have the dang village and well its just all bad.
I understand the misgivings having a highlevel player approaching a new player with an odd request. Clear communication is key. So is good manners. Thie way we use the Grouping System is player usage problem, not a programing one.
I at least tip the new player for their services as an icebreaker. After-all, doesn't everyone depend on others for one thing or another in this universe? One player thanked me for the 10,000 cr, claiming it was better than the 1000 they start with. Treat more Level 1 players this way, and we could be starting another "ettiquette" tradition Entertainers enjoy for their services.
The grouping system works as it was designed too. Players haven't looked backwards since they started their grind forwards.Thisbachwards grouping method discovery should NOT be treatedas a negative but as a positive. It benefits both parties involved.
If there is anything deplorable about the grouping system as it stands now it is the active High level player discrimination hold against low level players when forming hunting parties. IMHO at least one member of each group should be allowed to be a low level member if you are just grinding. But I guess I can't complain because this is a behavorial flaw, not a programing flaw.

Once I got home, I sat down and tested it myself. That sort of group strategy works very well indeed, which surprised me.
I agree that the issue is one of communication. Thanks for all your feedback.
Hehe - I must be one of the few weirdos who actually enjoys doing the group thing to level my pets - get to meet loadsa new people and usually have a laugh or 2 along the way - I also where my "helper" tag with pride and always go out of my way to help noobs with questions they have.
So last night I wandered around Eisley and did the above befriending thing to a noob for about an hour - He was extremely grateful and enjoyed running around with a huge razor cat following him - he gained real fast xp and so did my pet. I really dont think any CH should feel in the slightest bit guilty about this as no one is suffering from it. But saying this, I would not do this all the time as, as mentioned above, i enjoy levelling my pets my self.
The person I befriended my pet to was so impressed he said he was gonna go CH now would not really have even considered this if he hadn't been given the opportunity to play around with a decent pet for an hour. win/win situation ![]()
