Thank you. I appreciate the response. I do remember when it seemed like every other player was a Creature Handler. I remember the lag from all the pets in the cities.I'm not interested in PvP at all and if I ever really felt like taking down high level creatures I could always just group.

the realities of CH

your going to need a combat profession. to get the best wild pets your going to need MCH. i much prefer wild over BE as it gives me something to do in finding and training them. i use BE pets for PVE to tank for me. even tho i currently have TKM and can easily tank without armour i find a pet to be invaluable because i can call them in to attack so i can step back and regen mind a bit if bad things happen.

i use my pets in PVP effeectively and you can find that discussion in a thread further down on this page.

if your going toMR and MCH it will leave you with enough points for only three boxes of an elite combat profession. Rifle abilites line in the rifleman tree is probably the best overall choice when joined with headshot2 or flurry shot2 for general creature hunting using a fast laser or T21. pistol and carbine are not such good choices due to low damage out put at less than master levels. while rifle is slow it does have a better overall damage output when the only choice is 3 boxes.

the way CH was redisgned it is much like rifle it truly isnt useful until your almost master or have most of the boxes.

you might be better served with TKM ranger and medic 1000. that build would allow you to stay in the field pretty much indefinately. and you dont even need a weapon or armour to kill anything in the game up to a krayt.

with MCH MR your going to be left with not much real choice beyound rifleman 0003. i love my pets and CH will be the last skill i ever give up for good.

As a former Ranger I can appreciate where Tim is coming from. I dropped all of ranger and half of Scout to get Master Medic/Master Rifleman Scout 4-0-4-0 and I think I will end up with 4-0-0-4 in CH. Possibly more CH if I enjoy it alot. Which I find I am doing.

My main goal is to have some nice pet companions since do seem to solo alot. I have been chomping at the bit for a Wasteland Cupa mount and I am one point away from being able to ride/tame one. I did find at Oaftech(StarSider) there is some great BioPets and a really nice Gurrcat which I think is a great hunting partner and a nice conversation piece in a roleplaying aspect.

Ranger is just waste of points right now Tim, try some other stuff out and return to Ranger when its worth it.

I'm a Ranger on Starsider and I'm thinking about complimenting it with Creature Handler. I've only just browsed this board and am under the impression that much like Ranger, Creature Handler is weak and ignored. With that said I have a few questions.

1. What are the good things about being a Creature Handler? Why are you one?

2. What is bad? What makes you want to leave?

3. Have you been promised any future changes?

I want to make one thing clear. I wouldn't be taking CH because I want to be great at combat or anything. I would take it because I think it would compliment Ranger as an overall "one with nature" template. Thanks in advance.

It's good that you're not contemplating CH because you want to be good at combat, because against high end stuff and in PvP, CH sucks as a combat prof on its own, and you'll need to have some ranged or melee combat skills to go with it. I recommend the marksman pistol line because it deals mainly health bar damage, and that's where your creature pets will be hitting the most.

Against low to mid level mobs, especially in the critter hunting mode, CH is very handy to have. I'd recommend that you get at least enough CH to call a dewback for a mount, or perhaps get a large cat or one of the canines as a hunting companion.

I'm a CH because I like having the critters as companions and, frankly, as tanks for me, as much of my SP istied up with medic skills. Having creatures be my meatshieldmeans I don't have to wear armor or have elite combat skills (and their defensive benefits) to handle mid-level mobs in the game by myself. I also just get a kick out of the animations of the critters as they attack (leaping gurrecks, wrix, and sludge panthers are great fun) and the sounds associated with them.

For somone who is into the "outdoorsbeing" template, CH I think is a great complement to Ranger skills. It just seems natural to me (if you'll pardon the pun) that someone who seeks to be one with nautre would have some creature companions with them, as transportation and hunting partners.

CH is no longer the FOTM profession it was shortly after launch; we've been nerfed hard, and it shows in the game as you don't see nearly as many of us around as you did last summer and fall. This has a postive aspect; those of us who remain are here because we love the critters and enjoy being around them. They ARE cool, they're just not part of the l337 d00d template anymore, which is really a good thing. I think you'll have fun with CH.

I like my template quite alot. See my sig below.

I can heal myself and my pet with purchased stim b's (I also have a crate of pet stim c's for healing my pet). I get to use Pistoller Fan Shot which is awesome when you are hunting in order harvest resources. I get to have a very tough BE pet to tank for me. I get to tame baby creatures that I find in the wild, give them names and get very sentimental about them.

Most importantly, I can do all of that and be a Master Ranger.

I went with TKM / MCH, and 0/4/3/4 Medic. I can craft pretty good stim B and C's and Sell em' to keep myself with a steady income. I went CH for the Holo grind but stopped there because I like it. It's fun with the pets.. Hunting them to tame is a blast too .............

If you really feel that way, I think you would probably enjoy a CH/Ranger combo. I like the way they compliment eachother.

1) I am a Master CH/Master Ranger. (That leaves precious few skill points for anything else. lol) The template just fits with my character and I enjoy it very much... even with each professions shortcomings.

CH is a whole different ball game now than what it was before December. It is still a good profession, just not the powerhouse it had been. It is not recomended for someone who is really into PvP, but I don't care for that aspect of the game anyway.

2) The bad part is since our profession is understandably tied to the wild critters, it seems every patch brings bugs to us. Everytime they tweek something, we start seeing all sorts of strange behavior.... some of which can take quite a long time to be repaired. (We are still waiting on bug fixes from damage done in Publish 6)

3) Any future changes for us are waaaay in the future... and there really have not been any promises. We are behind practically every other profession, since we were one of the first to get any changes.

I was Master Ranger/Master CH for quite a few months. I only just recently dropped the Master Ranger status. I enjoyed the ability to go hunting (non missions) for various creatures on the advanced planets. The use of traps did help with the killing of quite a few Enraged Rancors. My limited Rifle skills, combined with my Rancor and Mountain Dewback, allowed me to kill a many Rancor.

I enjoyed sitting in my camps while healing with a nice trio of creature guards to keep me company. I enjoyed the tracking abilities Ranger granted to me when searching for a particular animal. I enjoyed the prestige I felt when wearing my Master Ranger title (the day I dropped it, I had seen no less than 12 of these running around in cities).

I like the solo-ability the combo gives me against creatures. Plus the information you know about certain creatures through Ranger and experience allows you to know what you can take down with ease and what you can't take down without help.

However, Ranger and CH both are kinda worthless in PvP, and every once in awhile you find yourself in the mood for this, but just know ahead of time, you will be in the Cloner in a very short time. This is my only concern regarding this combo. I will probably go back to this combo sometime in the future, unless of course, I find Space too hard to resist
