Thread: CH as only combat skill viable?

Actually, I'd say it is viable, to an extent. My "main" (in that she's my highest level character) is only at Polearms 4, so I don't consider her to really have a combat profession; on her own, she can solo a nuna and no higher without being at severe risk of incap. She's a Master CH, and while I can't fight anything that's terribly high level, between me and my pets we can survive enough to make a living. With your healing skills, you should be able to at least have a little fun with it, and hopefully more after the rebal.

That's the problem - anything that gives any XP is too hard to beat with just my pet.

With my level 25 GSP, he only gets 80 XP for killing a Swamp Humbaba, and with the help of anovice pikeman it still took too long to be worth 80 XP. With any lesser level pet I'd just be healing it the entire time.

Nope.. although with a novice combat profession like pistols or swords you can get by decently. Even better would be novice in TKA, Swords, or Pistols, and likey others would work too. Basicaly you need a way to add on some damage to what the pet does. Novice medic is also very usefull.

With very good BE pets it is somewhat possible. The trick is to choose resistances and specials carefully (stun/intimidate is a massive help) and to understand you will never be as effective as any other combat profession.

It also helps if you aren't interested in combat for combat's sake but just the pets for protection. Being a doc you do have the advantage of being able to buff your pets' stamina and constitution which makes them last a lot longer.

It has been true since day one that an advanced novice combat profession outdamages any creature in combat. Pets bring state change attacks and in some cases poison and disease, but they are not there as an offensive force. The power they bring is their power to absorb damage.

The role of the CH is the provider of the meatshield, and the director of traffic. In a group, during the height of CH madness, I rarely used my pistol IV skills, because I'd be leeching XP off of the others in the group and my contribution was in providing the meatshields/aggro controllers. With master medic skills I'd provide heals to pets and to group members in my spare time.

You can level CH with absolutely NO fighting...but it's not too much fun.

You can tame, train, release...rinse/repeat...for any non-agressive creature types that have babies.

No risk to you...but not much fun either.

Currently I'm a master doc andclose tobeing 0 4 0 3 CH (up to lvl 31 pets).

Without any other combat skills, is it reasonable to level up to master? The only way I've found to earn XP is to have my pet attack a creature which it couldn't possibly take out by itself, and then kill the creature with other skills like my rifle or with a friend help.

So is it possible to level CH ungrouped without other combat skills? Any hints?

This is an intresting topic to me because I think it is at the root of a good many of our issues. Are Ch supposed to be in addition to skills or as a stand alone skill?

This role has not be defined by the game as of yet. It is my hope that CB will help to define our role. As it stands I don't think the CH prof has been desgined, or rather has been nerfed away, from being a "main" combat skill. It remains to be seen how this will turn out.

However as a Doctor, in a group, with CH skills, it sounds like a really good support template. Once again, only my opinion

my advice would be to grab a basic combat skill just long enough to hit master CH.

I'm afraid not - Creature Handlers have virtually zero offensive punch; pets are good for company, and for meatshields - for practical applications, those are all they're good at.

Sicking a pet on an enemy - since you're a doctor - might work if you can keep pumping petstims or stimpacks into them, but they do so little damage that any fight will take a *long* time. I think you'll be bored to tears if you rely 100% on pets for offensive might; they just suck too bad right now.

Unless your pet is a good margin higher on the CL ladder than what you are attacking, your pets will need your help. The MD/MCH template is a great one for groups tho as you can healyour pets and players, thus keeping the tank(s) all healthy and the group working like clockwork. If you plan on soloing with CH...plan on picking up some type of combat class...doesn't have to be great, but your added damage will go a long way on creatures with high Kenetic resists that your pets can't really do damage to.

I agree with the above. If you need a combat skill forget about CH. I have been one for a very long time. It is not worth the skill points. You would be better served as a MD/MTKA because it takes less skill points and is easy to master. My alt is this combo and it also allows me to switch between Artisan with one box of Surveying and Scout with one box of Hunting. Both of which are very useful to a Doc. You will find that there is not much you can not handle in PVE and quests. You will also find that your will be invited to just about every PA, city, or hunting group that sees you.
