Well, /tellpet works so long as it's not a one-character command, I believe...

There has been some occasions where the pet goes after something you didn't want it to attack or chases a running mob a long distance. Is there any command like "come" to call it off and return to you?

Use whatever command you have taught for 'follow me'. In my case, I have a macro tied to one of my F# keys that goes: /tellpet heel
As a swordsman, I also use it to bring targets to me. I give: '/tellpet attack' , wait for my pet to engage the target, the give '/tellpet heel' to bring my pet and the target to me.
Since this also breaks my pet from attacking the target, I'll then '/taunt' the target so the it attacks me and leaves my pet alone.
Also even though you can give you pet the 'follow me' command in spatial, I do recommend '/tellpet' since it has a better range, similar to shouting the command. The pet can respond to it at a greater distance.

This is why you have to pay attention!

I find that there are specific NPCs that are highly likely to engage in kiting behavior on attacking pets. Selonian captains and those annoying furballs called the Drall are really prone to this.

So I have to be careful to keep an eye on whichever pet is on one of these and have /tellpet heel ready to call them back before they get out of range...no more than 100m from you, basically.

One time a Selonian captain took one of my pets Yoda only knows where, and the only way I got the pet back was by storing it...never did ever find out where it actually went, but it was down to about 10% of its health bar and probably managed to kill the Selonian captain in the process.

The problem is I was using a kimogila, and the way those things work its that it appears to be in one place but its actually 100 meters in another place going as fast as it can after an NPC :/.

Yes, I agree this is a problem. I suggested once that they make the follow commnad have infinate range on a planet. All others are fine with the range they have, but if they extend to follow command, it would significantly reduce how oftenI have to store and recall pets. They may chase a stormtrooper 1000 meters during combat, and I have no idea where they are.

Also you can't call a pet, get it buffed up with rest of group, then head out with group on speederes. Cause you will lose pet and storing it removes buffs. Extended command range for follow could help with this too (though they may not arrive til the fight is over, they would still arrive.
