Creatures will occasionally use their ranged attacks if you don't tell them to, but will then close to melee range. If you use the ranged attack command it will toggle ranged attack on, and they will only use that. The problem with ranged attacks is that you cannot toggle the command back off, so you're stuck with the ranged attack until you store the pet. Hope that makes sense.

I know that my be'd pets start to use their ranged attacks at first. After 2-3 attacks they charge and use melee attacks

The problem is that ive only gotten that message once. and only once and even then the pet didnt want to use a ranged attack. And I know that pets are supposed to use there ranged attack occasionally when told to attack but ive noticed a huge difference in the behavior of dune lizards at least because before all they used was a ranged attack and now it still uses its ranged attack more frequently than other pets but it still uses mostly normal attacks.

Yeah I too can attest to this. I have had my dune lizard for quite awhile. Even before I was able to train my pets to range attack on demand, my Liz did this almost 80% of the time I would say. Now he will automatically go to melee attacks. I tried this out last week with my lizard, told him to "stay" about 20 meters from where I was going to be tanking. Did not set his attack to ranged, told him to attack... he ran straight in and began to melee. Tried it on about 5 or so mobs, did the same thing everytime. Now I can of course set his attack to ranged and its np.
I wonder if they have made it so that only a CH with the proper skill boxes trained can actually use the commands such as ranged attack. This would not surprise me. I know that all my pets with ranged attack will preform as ordered, but I am a MCH. Not sure if this is a bug or a nerf =p
Oh and yeah I wish they would patch this so I can turn off ranged attack. Thats such an obvious bug its pitiful that it does not get fixed asap.

I've been using my pets heavily during the past three or four nights, and I haven't been seeing this. Actually,it seemed to methat my blurrg was defaulting to his ranged attack most of the time. This was primarily during large group hunts (where my pets didn't necessarily have to tank in every encounter).

Ok the last time I ground up MCH at the geo caves I used a dune lizard because it seemd that there default attack was the ranged one. So this time I go out and tame 2 (I had to get the second one because he was stuck under a house
) and bring out one for grinding with friends. When I try to stay back and tell it to attack I notice something different in the behavior since last time. Instead of defaulting to the ranged attack like it did last time it was defaulting to normal attacks and rarely used his ranged attack at all. I also have a BE choku with a ranged attack and had a MCH train it, but even when commanded it would only use his normal attack. No matter what I did he would not use ranged.
I havent seen any patch notes about them mesing with the code for this so why is it acting differently?
