Thread: DMG Bug or am I misunderstanding the level system?

I'm an MCH, I tamed 3 Greater Sludge Panthers CL23...they all have leveled twice and their stated damage rangeis something like 56-253 but I am finding that in combat they are only hitting for 31 points each time (all tests have been against Dewbacks). I pulled my CL65 gurrcat and who has damage range of 95-280 (somthing like that) and he's only hitting for 73 points.

Am I not getting it or is it a bug that the aren't hitting for their minimums?

Damage range is just like your gun has. You rarely actually hit for the damage the gun says, its all "random" and based on the ability you use, the resists of the enemy, the level of the enemy, your accuracy skills etc.

Most of my pets hit from about 110 on the low end to 350 on the high end depending on the creature and their built hit type. (spitters seem to hit for higher dmg than melee in many cases, for some reason)

But with guns don't you always at least hit with the minimum?

Also it's not random...it's always 31....

Usually yes, because the difference in your lvl vs target level and your accuracy vs target defense is not that big. But pets tend to have lower levels, lower accuracy and lower dmg to begin with. So they end up hitting pretty low dmg at times.

I dont think pet growth levels actually affect the dmg the pet does anymore either. If you're fighting an enemy that is near or above your pets level (regardless of grouping etc) they will probably hit for less dmg.

Keep in mind that if you are doing "missions" or killing anything you get exp from your pets level is already quite a bit lower than the enemy. Try grouping with the pet to see if it hits harder. Or try other pets. If your pets are BE pets and not hitting for much dmg, try to find a similar level wild creature to tame and see how it hits.

Ive found that my pets hit for the exact same amount of damage every hit on a specific type/level of creature. If I fight a different creature or NPC it sometimes is different. I really dont know why it works that way now as it used to work differently.

If the dewbacks that you are testing on are CL80 mission lairs, that is why. Their level is so much lower than that of your pets, that the damage is very very small. It could be either because level 80's have high defense values, or it could be because of the level modifier that causes creatures to do less damage to something that is purple con to them (same reason that low level creatures do almost nothing to you).

If you turn on Verbose combat spam at the bottom ofOptions>Chat, you'll probably find that your pets are doing their exact minimum damage at first, and then the creatures armor is reducing it so that it looks lower.

EDIT: I just tested this, and my theory was right. I had my CL16 Mountain Murra out and attacking a CL41 Thune. Damage said 37, but when I turned on the Verbose combat spam with the armor resist it was doing 48 damage, and 11 was absorbed by the Thune's armor. His min damage is 48.

Putting it simply. Its no longer random.

OfficerDribble found the damage formula a while back:

DAMAGE = ((TOHIT/1500)+(LEVEL_DIFFERENCE/30))*(MAX-MIN) + (MAX+MIN)/2

The level_difference is between your pet and the target (the grouping bonus is included). If it is the same then the middle term is zero. Basically, your pet will always do damage between minimum and maximum and only reach either one if the CL difference is +/- 15.

Once that is calculated, armor is taken into account.

Well there is the more complicated answer for you.

To the origional poster. More than likely your pets are ungrouped and thus hitting for the min damage listed, then factor in armor and innate player defenses and yea you get about 30-50 points of damage.

Also of not, if your pet's happen to be highter CL than you, grouping lowers their effective CL, so that is worth keeping in mind.

Ok so they are 3 CL23's and full grown if I am ungrouped with them the will only ever hit a cl80 Mountain Dewback for 31 points. And my cl65 Gurrcat will only ever hit for 75...unless I group with it?

Ugh...that's dumb.

It's not really dumb. It follows pretty much the standard CU rules. If I was a level 26 and went up against a CL80 creature, I would do very minimal damage. However if I join a group of CL80 players then I would do normal damage for that weapon because I would be considered a CL80 and not a CL26.
