Thread: Did I miss a change in the pet training XP?
Ok so I got my CH back up and running witht h eintention to make up for lost ground, I eventually tamed another pet with an ability, and it was aconciderably lower lvl than the last, 11 Vs 54, so though I'd lvl it up first and learn the ability, After a while I noticed that I was only getting the one XP message, the one that related to myself, so I tried the other new pet and all the old ones, but I got the same result, only the one XP message. Now my pets still seem to be getting XP, but I cant tell unless I look in the data pad, and it seems they are getting the XP I do, so where as before I could attack a lvl 54 creature with my pet let it kill it and it would get full XP, now it only gets one.
Has somthing changed that I missed in the notes, or it it a bug, that is wide spread, or maybe just happening to some people?
Thanks for the help, Beswa.
If you group with your pet, it will get XP based off the group level, AKA your level. If you do not group with it, it will get XP based on its own level vs the creature.
I don't think there ever has been a system message for pets gaining training XP, at least I've never gotten one. The only messages I get are for learning abilities and getting more training points and ability slots.
The system message is for CH XP
The pet's XP (which I'll refer to as Critter XP) only updates in the datapad itself.
If you are grouped with the pet, the pet assumes your level, and the Critter XP is calculated based on the group level. If I group a level 4 flewt with me, a level 80 player, and send the flewt after a hermit spider, the flewt will get appropriate Critter XP for being a level 80 attacting a level 4. That is, 1 point of Critter XP. If I'm doing a mission against level 80mobs, and I group the flewt with me, it will earn the maxiumCritter XP for its level, just as players are capped if they're level 10 players in a level 80 group, they don'tget the mad XP that a level 80 player does in the same group. If I do not group with the flewt, and send it after the hermit spider, it will get approriate Critter XP for a level 4 vs. a level 4, that is, about 225CritterXP, which will be updated on the datapad.
So, unless you're taking on mobs near or at your own level, don't group with the pet. I've been working my pets against things near their own level, ungrouped, and rolling them over consistently. I picked up Fleet Footed L1 from a flewt in about 30 mintutes doing this. The key is for them to get ONE hit, then I can open up with my DL44 or DE10 and finish the mob off quickly due to the damage multipliers inherent in a level 80 character damaging at level 70 or below level mob.
As stated in the guide, pets who go destroy empty lairs get VERY nice Critter XP, depending upon the damage they do. Last night my newly tamed mountain murra got more 5k CritterXP for destroying the very lair I kidnapped him from, which compares to a bit more of 1k Critter XP per level 16 mountain murra I sent him up against. Now, admittedly, it takes a while for a pet who is hitting at somthing like 250 points a whack to destroy a 20k strength lair, even after you've initiated the damage. Just be careful, if they lair is not empty the new arrivals will aggro on YOU as the instigator of the destruction of the lair. The pet can be called off the lair destruction with several "follow mes" and redirected to the attacking mobs, but you'll need to spam "follow me" a bit to get the recall order to stick and switch targets, but it's better than pre pub 21 when the pets would not get out of aggro at all and switching targets was impossible.
Cheers guys,
But I am positive that I was getting two messages, because some time I would get two messages saying we both got 1 xp, so i tested it a bit to see how many times that happened, I even bugged it!, did that happen to anyone else, am I going mad?

Possible Training XP Feature and/or Bug
There appears to be a way for pets to gain Training XP at a fairly steady pace, that is based upon the CL vs CL XP model for toons. Here is how it works -
- Chose a pet that you want to bring the maturity levels up on.
- Find a type mob that is of appropriate CL as the pet. If the pet is CL4 then find mobs that are in the CL1 - CL5 range.
- DO NOT group with the pet.
- Have the pet attack the mobs, while healing / helping it in combat.
- Wash and repeat
This method will give your pet full Training XP, with minimal risk to the pet, or you, if the pet is 15+ Levels lower then you are. As long as you do not group up with the pet, it will gain Training XP fairly quickly, compared to using the pet in your normal combat group. If you group up with the pet, and attempt to kill mobs that are of a lower CL then your own, then the pet will only gain 1 Training XP. I believe this to be a feature addition, since it would allow a CH the ability to train 3 non-CH creatures in a relatively short amount of timeso that they can become fully grown to use as a mount and given Abilities.
And just to clarify, using the pets to kill mobs of a level appropriate to their own, will give you XP based upon your Level vs the mobs level. This means that if you have your pack of kaadu female (babies) hunting CL14s and you are a Level 80, you will only gain 1 CH XP, while your kaadu will gain full Training XP.
There is a bug related to this however....
Approximately 25% of the time, when using this method, you will gain CH XP that is equal to the XP that you would gain if you were the same CL as your pets, plus your normal XP. This means that in the above mentioned kaadu female hunting pack, approximately 25% of the time, you will gain 1 CH XP and 600 (this number is only an example and not the actual amount of XP that you would gain.) CH XP. When this occurs, you will lose all /harvest and /loot rights to that kill.
They seemed to have fixed it though.
Basically, what would happen if you sent your pet in ungrouped and had it do any type of attack, the mob it was attacking would die and you would not be able to loot/harvest from it. When this happened, you got 2 messages about XP and received this XP (You, not the pet) The first message was XP you gain for your level vs. the level of the mob that died. The second message (the bug) would give you XP based on your creatures level vs. the mob that died.
Phew, /wipesbrow
I'm not going mad, there are changes in the patch notes on TC as well that apparently stop it happening.
