to name a pet you teach it 4 different commands with the name you want before the command. so, you train "Fido store" as the store command for example. then once the name sticks, you can changethe commandback to whatever you really want. so, as soon as you know 4 commands, which is any first box except taming, you can name pets.
there is a name filter for pets that blocks even some things you wouldn't expect. i remember way back someone wanted their pet named KingSomething and that wouldn't take. so if you have trouble, try a variation, it might be the filter not accepting the name.

Here's a compilation of naming restrictions to bear in mind (this applies for droids, so I assume it is the same for pets):
* No Spaces
* Name is case sensitive
* Up to 25 characters
* No numbers
* No iconic names, and obviously the SOE name filter will apply
And if you do the four commands with the pet name and it doesn't take...it means either the name is not exact in all four commands or the name was rejected.

Can you do it at novice CH, oris it in a higher box?
Straight answer - once you learn your first Tier 1 box. Then you'll have the fourth command to teach. Novice CH's only have 3 to work with. (Unless it's changed)
